Carlos Camarena needs no introduction to those familiar with fine Tequila, but for those of you who are still getting your feet wet: he's the man behind a number of outstanding brands on today's market; those bearing the NOM number 1474 on the side label. His father first founded La Alteña in 1937. While most distilleries have opted for modern efficiencies and mechanical shredders, in the case of El Tesoro, the agave is still cooked in traditional ovens, 100% tahona crushed, fermented in open wooden vats, and double distilled to proof so nothing is ever watered down. We are occasionally given the chance to select from the finest reposado barrels the distillery has to offer. Carlos Camarena selects his best barrels and then we choose our favorite from the bunch. Prized for their agave flavor, these rested tequilas showcase less wood and more sweet agave than other brands which focus on wood influence to cover up a lack of flavor in the spirit itself. Barrel #B64 is a prime example of the delicate influence El Tesoro is known for in their aging.
