2017 Ridge Vineyards "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1469334 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Monte Bello Vineyard is blended with 21% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The nose is still tightly wound, taking plenty of air to reveal deep aromas of cassis, tobacco, licorice and coffee with top notes of violet and graphite. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, with a firm grain and concentrated fruits, and it finishes very long, layered and uplifted. This will require more time in bottle than the Klein Cabernet. 4,250 cases produced. (EB) Inner quote mark (2/2021)

Outer quote mark Ridge’s 2017 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a fabulous choice for readers who want a Monte Bello fix now, without having to wait. Supple, radiant and silky, with tremendous balance, the 2017 is just flat-out delicious and utterly irresistible. Dark red cherry/plum fruit, mocha, licorice, sweet tobacco and a kick of American oak build as this sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon shows its allure. The 2017 is an outrageously beautiful wine. Don’t miss it. (AG) Inner quote mark (9/2020)

Outer quote mark The limestone seabed on which this cabernet grows produces Monte Bello as well as this Estate bottling, a selection of the parcels that provide a more accessible wine early on. Those parcels rise up the mountainside in Cupertino, ranging from 1,300 to 2,700 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Crafted by Eric Baugher, the 2017 is an austere yet concentrated wine with mellow intensity, its organically farmed fruit offering fresh black currant and anise savor, its tannins capturing the mineral inflection and tension that limestone soils can give. Rather than effusive enthusiasm, it’s a wine of coastal harmony. Zen Cabernet. (JG) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

91 points Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark Medium in volume and high in complexity, this easy-to-like bottling combines inviting notes of cassis with hints of olive and root beer-like richness in its first nose and entry to the palate. On second glance, there are hints of black cherries and a quiet whiff of spice to be had, and those elements hold into the polished, lightly tannic finish. The wine is sure to age on balance alone, and its ease on the palate gives it current drinkability as well. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

This super release from Ridge is solid, solid, solid! Blackberry and boysenberry fruit on the nose definitely impress. On the palate, a slight bit of extraction is counterbalanced by fine tannins at the sides of the tongue. Black cherry cola notes backup the boysenberries and oak. Long finish with a hint of minerals. So superbly drinkable now but, will age extremely well. I imagine this sitting in the cellar comfortably for the next 20 years plus.

Blackberry fruit, savory herb and cassis form the backbone of this smooth, silky and proportioned wine. This shows plenty of forward fruit in a balanced, approachable style designed for early drinking but will pick up complexity if you can keep your hands off it. This has all the "Wow" factor you expect in a CA Cab of this pedigree but far more discretion than you usually find at this price point.

This perennial sleeper wine is purely declassified Monte Bello. The fruit is grown at Monte Bello with the same meticulous farming as the lots for the flagship wine. It's harvested the same and the initial the winemaking techniques are exactly the same as its big brother. Only once the wine is almost done with fermentation is it evaluated for inclusion in the Monte Bello or Estate Cabernet. The decision is made by taste alone, the lots that winemaker, Eric Baugher feels can handle more extraction to endow the wine with more structure and longevity become destined for the top bottling, the lots that are more approachable, and lend themselves to earlier drinking are directed to the Estate Cab. The key thing to note here is that Ridge’s “Estate” Cab is almost four times less expensive than Monte Bello! And for those of us with less patience...you can drink it from the outset! The 2017 Monte Bello has multiple 100 point scores and has been hailed as "one for the ages" by Jeb Dunnuck. Touted as "one of the all-time greats" by the Wine Advocate. Several critics have suggested that it will be a 50-60 year wine. Baugher even laughed and said he wouldn't be surprised if it was a 100 year wine! However, if you want something to drink in the meantime you can't go wrong with this bottle.
