K&L Notes

Argyros was established in 1903 and is now run by 4th generation winemaker Matthew Argyros. All vines are planted on their original rootstock and average over 70 years of age. Some of the oldest have even reached the 200 year mark. All grapes for the Assyrtiko are from the estate and are planted over volcanic soils. About 80% of the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks while 20% ferments and ages in French barrique. The combination is a harmonious and pure expression of this grape and its island terroir.

The wines of Santorini exude so much excitement these days. Their noble grape, Assyrtiko does not fit into any fixed idea of the more classic international varietals like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. It has a depth of flavor that is its own, which helps build the expectation. The island itself is composed of volcanic soils, mostly of ash rained down on the island millennia ago from a massive eruption, which contributes to the uniqueness of island grown Assyrtiko. The salty winds blow over the island adding a light saline character that is hard to replicate in other parts of Greece as well. The Argyros Assyrtiko is at the top of the rung of the ladder for quality from Santorini. This is all estate fruit from old vines, some 200+ year of age. This translates to vibrant and mineral driven white that feels like Chablis meets Gruner. Crushed rocks, crisp pear, a whisper of sea air and a rich texture and you have a benchmark island wine worth trying. And even cellaring. These do really well with a couple of years of age on them.
