2016 Bodegas Muga Reserva Rioja

SKU #1467218 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is really tight and powerful with gorgeous tannins and solid fruit. Full body. Tight and composed. Wet earth, smoked meat and hints of black truffles. Very long and powerful. Wonderful length. Real Rioja. One of the top best-value, high-quality reds in Spain. Inner quote mark (7/2019)

Outer quote mark This has the Muga style and the imprint of the cool and fresh 2016 vintage, one of the best vintages of recent years. 2016 is also a year of harmony and freshness that reminds me a little of the 2010. But the Muga family thinks it's somewhere between 2010 and 2011, because for them 2011 is not so warm, even if it generally produced quite ripe wines. It has a mixture of red and black fruit with sweet spices that are very integrated and in harmony. The palate is silky and clean, and the tannins are round and gentle. (LG) Inner quote mark (6/2019)

K&L Notes

Quite simply, Muga is a benchmark in Rioja. Featuring a combination of owned and contracted vineyards in Rioja Alta, many of which are in higher elevation locales, and employing a vinification in oak uprights followed by patient elevage in barrels, these wines faithfully represent traditional Rioja Alta style, year after year.

70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo and Graciano. The nose is classic Rioja. Clean fruited blackcurrants and leather notes with a silky texture and a long finish accented by spice notes and hints of oak. There is a freshness to the fruit here that brings me back for another sip, and another... The wines of Muga always exude class in my mind. This is an amazing value and a wine that has many years ahead of it should you decide to lay some down.

There’s a common joke around the K&L Redwood City staff whenever we open a killer bottle of Rioja. We tend to look at each other and say, “Why aren’t we drinking more of this?”. The answer, obviously, is that we should be. The quality is astronomical and the value is most definitely there. Take for instance the 2016 Muga Rioja Reserva. Aromas of black currant, blackberry, leather, and forest floor with just a slight edge of oak has your mouth watering. The palate is concentrated and delivers a deeper fruit expression with an astounding sense of balance. It’s been open a few hours and the tannins are beautifully softened. All together, this is such a perfectly composed wine that should have heads turning from anyone who loves full bodied reds.

This is show-stopping Rioja. I have never had a Muga Reserva like this. The nose is incredible, it is a needle scratch nose, I had to double-check that I had the right wine, and I was the one who poured it! There is a dark ripe fruit tone that you would never expect from a Reserva Rioja. It is broad with loads of the dark berries you expect from Tempranillo and Graciano but there is something amiss with the nose, where is the oak? It is there, but it is hiding behind all of that fruit. It is upon the second and third sniff that you catch the Rioja complexity. Oak spice, earth, tobacco, muted florals, and minerality. I do not know how anyone cannot like how this smells. The palate delivers everything that you expect from a Muga Reserva. The fruit is darker, with more purity than some recent vintages but the structure, depth of flavor, complexity, and length are all there. The also exuberance on the nose is balanced by the restrain of the palate. The tannins are present, framing and very polished. The oak accentuates the fruit, focusing it with a subtle spice. This has another level of sophistication that you would expect from this classic Rioja producer. The finish is long, with a great interplay of dark fruit and a fine stony earthiness. This quite a Rioja, it speaks to the work that they do not only in the vineyards but the winery too, the wine expresses not only the region and the specific winery but does so without you seeing any of their work. This will be very hard to not drink every bottle that you buy in the near future, but this is a wine that will improve for well over a decade.

Flashy and extroverted on the nose, this pours out an intoxicating bouquet of crushed blueberry, blackberry compote, and ripe black cherry complemented by cedar, sweet tobacco, leather, baking spices, graphite, and toffee. It's lush and generous on the palate, yet with a refreshing focus and plenty of classical structural poise. This rides a fine line between modern and old-school Rioja and does it extremely well. A classic steakhouse wine from Muga, and a spectacular value at the price.

Tasted before I ever saw anything in our system on this, and I actually had to go check we had the right price listed when I finally saw it. One of the best values in the store for hearty, high-quality reds that can upscale most dinners or meet serious fare at its level. Gorgeous fruit notes on the nose mix with a earthy, mineral combination on the palate that finishes long and strong. More friendly than any Muga I've tasted, but still deep and complex.
