2015 Marqués de Murrieta "Capellanía" Blanco Rioja

SKU #1466126 96 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A linear and tight white with superb lemon curd, apple, lemon and creme caramel. Full body, phenolic tension and density give this white form and beauty. Extremely long and flavorful. Inner quote mark (12/2019)

Outer quote mark The Viura plot covers 6 hectares, planted in 1945 on a plateau at an altitude of 485 metres. The wine has been aged for fifteen months in new French oak after fermentation in stainless steel. Green tinges and white gold, then a seductive nose which marries tropic fruit, beeswax, verbena and chamomile. The palate adds chalky, white pepper complexity and hints of pineapple and quince. The tropical and the citric dance an energetic pas de deux; fresh and composed, yet, for all that, one does not entirely lose the distinctive waxy personality of its previous incarnation, when American oak held court. Outer quote mark One of two vintages I tasted of the single-vineyard white, the just-bottled 2015 Capellanía was cropped from a warm and healthy year, and the wine matured in new French oak barrels for 15 months. Like it happened with the rosé, the two vintages I tasted of this white—2015 and 2014—are also very different, with 2015 a more homogeneous year and the 2014 quite a bit more challenging. 2015 was a healthy and warm year, and the grapes were picked quickly (they harvest all of these grapes in one and a half days). All of the wines are kept some time in concrete before bottling. This is a powerful and round wine, with stuffing to develop nicely in bottle, a little in the style of the 2012. However, don't think the wine is soft or flabby, as Viura keeps very good acidity and makes wines that are lively and with freshness in the finish. This is, of course, bone dry and nicely textured. These are generously oaked whites that should develop over the years. (LG) Inner quote mark (6/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2015 Rioja Blanco “Capellanía” Reserva from Marqués de Murrieta is composed entirely of Viura and is aged for fifteen months in new French casks prior to bottling. The wine is fairly new oaky on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of pear, fresh almond, a hint of fresh pineapple, acacia blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and zesty, with a lovely core of fruit, a fine girdle of acidity, plenty of new oak and a long, nascently complex and well-balanced finish. This wine has the stuffing to eventually carry its new oak component quite well, but it is still a young wine and right now the new oak still sticks out a bit on the backend, so give this wine a bit more cellaring time to allow it to better integrated its wood. All of the constituent components here are excellent, but the oak is just a bit obtrusive at the present time. I would love to see this bottling raised in used barrels exclusively in the future, as I think it would still show a nice touch of vanilla from the French oak and not require time to integrate the wood. Outer quote mark This round white is generous yet lively. Bright flavors of peach, quince and lime mingle with coconut and lanolin notes, backed by vibrant acidity. Has the structure for the long haul. (TM) Inner quote mark (8/2020)

This is great wine. It effortlessly does everything that great wine can do. It tastes specifically of where it is from. It is made from old vine fruit grown in a single vineyard. That single vineyard is in a region renowned from making great wines for centuries. It spent 15 month in new French oak barrels, now that can be a tricky thing for some people and for them it is mitigated by being stored at least a year in bottle before release and in this case it has already seen a full three years in bottle. (A quick aside, thank you Rioja. Thank you for maintaining a tradition of wine that keeps wine from entering the market too immediately.) This is already a fully realized wine, it will age beautifully for a long time, but there is no need to wait and put it in your cellar, just drink it. Imagine buying a premier cru white burgundy from a great producer where the wine was stored in their cellar for years before release, how expensive would that be?! This is a tremendous value. This wine feels like a great wine. It is textural and rich with tension and drive. It smells and tastes like a great wine. It is effortlessly complex, by that I mean that there are many layers and a huge range of flavors but it is not overwhelming they all work together to every component. it is just fun to smell and taste, you do not need food but what a dinner companion! This has been a take-out champion in my house. Half a bottle with Indian one night, second half with Persian, that was two weeks ago for me. This wine will go with almost everything, and it will immediately elevate everything. The best and most important thing about this wine is it just tastes good! It is intellectually satisfying but it is just delicious.

I believe that an exceptionally crafted white Rioja is one of the greatest gems to discover in the world of wine, and Marques de Murrieta has hit the nail on the head with this vintage of 'Capellanía'. Beautiful textural finesse highlights the balance of the wines structure & brightness. Bursting with notes of lemon verbena, quince, crushed rocks, salinity and creamy chamomile, Capellania would be a great addition now for a sea bass dinner with a cream sauce. But this wine has great potential to cellar, and those who can resist the urge to enjoy all of it now will certainly be rewarded.

Murrieta's Capellania represents a benchmark for white Rioja wine, and this might be the finest vintage I've tasted yet. Boasting marvelous tension, it rivals white Burgundy twice the price in its poise and texture. Citrus and stone fruit sit atop a brioche-like layer of toasty lees with a saline edge. Creamy vanilla adds depth and gentle wood tannin provides solid structure, while a slightly herbal finish makes the ideal partner for the abundant acid and fruit. This would be a dream with poached cod or a cheese plate (complete with aged Manchego), but I highly recommend cracking one open for your next sushi dinner. Whether with food or by itself, you'll enjoy this bottle for years to come.

White Rioja is unbelievable when done well, and arguably nobody does it better than Marques de Murrieta. They are staunch defenders of historic white production techniques for the region, and Murrieta's "Capellania" continues that tradition. Rich, powerful and incredibly aromatic, the juice is still focused with intense precision throughout the palette. Aggressively crushable, but also deserving of some careful aging, this is rare stuff. Lemon Meringue and custard on the front, fading into a slight white stone and saline mid, and ending with a bone dry, herbal finish. Absolute Fire.
