2017 Shafer "One Point Five" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1465986 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Fresh cassis and blueberries with crushed violets and stones, too. This is fresh and complex. The palate carries a smooth, supple and tautly refined brand of tannin and a succulently fresh core of blue plums and blueberries. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Outer quote mark The name signifying a generation and a half of Shafers (Doug and his late father, John), this is a powerfully built, robust and rounded wine. Sage and violet aromas lead to a strong, sturdy core of tannin, oak and muscle, developed with sweet tobacco, cassis and cola. (VB) Inner quote mark (7/2020)

Outer quote mark Cut from the same cloth, yet with a touch of rusticity in its tannins, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five offers a full-bodied, rounded, structured style as well as loads of sweet red and black fruits, toasted spice, and herbed de Provence like notes. It’s a powerful, concentrated wine, has loads of fruit, and is going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This offers fruit in spades, delivering a lush, seductive profile of blueberry, açaí and cassis notes infused with mocha and sweet tobacco accents, ending with a melted licorice feel. Rich, polished and long. (JM) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

Year in year out Shafer One Point Five is a rock solid go to for big, bold, exuberant Napa Cabernet. This stalwart estate in Stags' Leap has a close to flawless record stretching back decades and is consistently one of my top recommendations to folks looking for a rich, fruit forward, powerful style of Cabernet. This sub-region of Napa gets lots of intense afternoon sunshine and reflected warmth off the towering mountain sides that skirt this part of the valley. This gives the wine an extra pop of exotic fruit, blueberry going into boysenberry with toasted spices, scorched earth and dried herbs. The structure is powerful and mouth coating, but the tannins are fully ripe and not harsh even when drunk young. Considering this wine pedigree and consistent huge critical acclaim, the price has stayed very modest by today's standards. To find a wine like this for under $100 is becoming increasingly rare. Bravo, Shafer!
