2016 Gour de Chaulé "Cuvée Tradition" Gigondas

SKU #1465939 95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Vivid ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and pit fruits, potpourri and garrigue, and an exotic spice note emerges in the glass. Stains the palate with sweet raspberry, cherry and lavender pastille flavors that steadily put on weight with air. Conveys a suave blend of power and finesse and finishes extremely long and floral, with fine-grained tannins lending discreet grip. (JR) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Still in a combination of concrete tanks and wooden foudres, the 2016 Gigondas Cuvee Tradition is relatively muted on the nose but shows enormous fruit on the palate, giving up notes of cherries and stone fruit. My raw notes even ask the question: "Maybe, maybe too much fruit?" As an aside, is that even possible? This big, fruit-driven wine lacks a bit of nuance at this stage, but it is enjoyable and no doubt will develop some additional complexity with bottle age. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

K&L Notes

Established in 1900 in the heart of Gigondas, Gour de Chaule is now run by the founder's great-granddaughter, Stephanie Fumoso. This is a female driven property as Stephanie's grandmother and mother were both actively involved in making the wines and establishing the property's domaine bottlings. The estate is comprised of 15 hecatares planted in the surrounding region, 10 of which are within the appellation of Gigondas. Grenache is the main grape variety, making up about 80+% of the blend with Syrah and Mourvedre making up the rest. Grapes are harvested manually and never destemmed. Elevage is in large oak foudres where the wine rests for about 18 months when it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The end result is a traditionally made and balanced wine that reflects some of the best that Gigondas has to offer.

Everything we've come to know and love about Gigondas thrives here in a package that I expected to cost quite a bit more. Opening with fragrant potpourri and gentle notes of peppercorn, it comes alive on the palate with dark fruit, rich meat, Asian spices and lacquered wood. What really sets this apart, though, is how the generous flavors and weight are securely suspended by marvelous acid and supple tannin. Perfect for braised short rib, Korean-inspired meat dishes (not too spicy), or a wide variety of hearty, heavy dishes, this wine knocks it out of the park.

Gour de Chaule has long been one of my favorite Rhone producers and their Gigondas ranks among the very best. It's seamless throughout and offers depth and length of fruit only a few in this category manage to deliver. An exquisite red.

An exquisite Gigondas if there ever was one. The Gour de Chaule opens with tremendous peppery spices and herbal garrigue notes on the nose. It's like walking the forests of Gigondas. On the palate, the brambly black fruit interlaced with fresh lavender presents itself with restrained yet forward character. The balance is seamless with supple tannins. This is a classic and harmonious Gigondas loaded with so much character. Not to be missed!

Domaine du Gour de Chaulé is a female-owned estate, current proprietor Stephanie Fumoso farms the vineyards and makes the wine. This is a perfect expression of old-school Gigondas from a legendary vintage, full of the classic aromas of the surrounding wild herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender), showing a lush, spicy character with lots of red and black fruits. There is no time like the present to elevate your wine drinking pleasure, so don't put off until tomorrow what you should be drinking today. Chateauneuf enthusiasts will appreciate this classic too.
