2017 Domaine Giraud "Tradition" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1463564 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark I loved the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape, and I’d certainly be happy with a case in the cellar. Offering a pure, elegant, incredibly Grenache-driven profile of sweet black raspberries, incense, violets, and garrigue, it’s medium to full-bodied, ethereal, and elegant on the palate. It’s already hard to resist yet will keep for 10-15 years. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Outer quote mark Coming in (rating-wise) right where I projected it would last year, Giraud's 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape is a terrific example of a cuvée tradition. At 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, it's a pretty typical blend yet one that exceeds expectations. It's full-bodied, plush and velvety, showing ample ripeness - raspberries, cherries, and stone fruit - without going over the top into cooked fruit. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A fleshy core of lightly mulled raspberry, plum and red currant fruit flavors cruises through, backed by ample licorice, singed cedar and dried garrigue notes. Finely beaded acidity adds latent energy to the finish. (JM) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

91-92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Vivid magenta. Intense, mineral-accented red berry preserve, spicecake and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals and garrigue. Juicy, seamless raspberry liqueur and cherry flavors become deeper and sweeter while maintaining urgency. Shows solid thrust on the sweet, red-fruit-dominated finish, which is framed by gentle, slow-building tannins. (JR) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

K&L Notes

Domaine Giraud is under the stewardship of brother-sister team François and Marie Giraud taking over the primary roles from their monther and father. François handles the vineyards and Marie oversees the winemaking. Committed to organic farming since 2011, the winery continues to make some of the most excititng and forward Grenache dominant Châteauneufs. The "Tradition" is 2/3 Grenache with the rest made up of Syrah and Mourvèdre. Vines range between 50-80 years old on clay-limestone soils with galets (the big rolled stones) on the surface. Fermentation is in stainless steel and concrete tanks. Grenache and Mourvèdre are aged in concrete and Syrah ages in French oak.

Not for the faint of heart, Domaine Giraud’s “Tradition” is a flashy, full-bodied red that nevertheless feels balanced, with a rush of concentrated black fruit giving way to a vibrant, almost mineral-driven palate and long, velvety finish. The complex 2017 opens with an aromatic nose full of violets and baking spice, followed by a plush mouthfeel that's tempered by black pepper and apparent-but-integrated oak. There is a lot going on here that will refine beautifully with time. Domaine Giraud is a perfect ambassador for this legendary region, showcasing classic CDP style while staying accessible.

Another lovely addition to our CDP offerings. This Grenache-heavy GSM is full-bodied, super velvety, and has a seductive aroma of black cherries, washed stone, cool mint, anise, and candied plums. There is a noticable oak presence, without it taking over the flavor profile. Notes of licorice, dark fruit, and wet rock flavors swirl about as the wine opens up - I suggest a short decant of about half an hour for it to reach its peak.

Another stunning example of Chateauneuf du Pape, the 2017 Giraud delivers on every level. Sticky black fruit, sumptuous and decadent, balanced by sufficient spice and river rock minerals. The oak is present without feeling overwhelming thanks to concrete aging on a sizable portion of the final blend. Though this could age for years to come, I would encourage anyone crack it open right now, make some cassoulet and go to town.

The Giraud always fires on all cylinders when it is released. It is a sexy forward style showing flavors of Chambord, bay leaf, cardamom and violets. Sumptuous as always, the concentration of the 2017 vintage lingers on the palate. Always one of my favorites for its youthful exuberance but this is a wine that will deliver untold pleasures for years to come.
