I loved the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape, and I’d certainly be happy with a case in the cellar. Offering a pure, elegant, incredibly Grenache-driven profile of sweet black raspberries, incense, violets, and garrigue, it’s medium to full-bodied, ethereal, and elegant on the palate. It’s already hard to resist yet will keep for 10-15 years.

Coming in (rating-wise) right where I projected it would last year, Giraud's 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape is a terrific example of a cuvée tradition. At 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, it's a pretty typical blend yet one that exceeds expectations. It's full-bodied, plush and velvety, showing ample ripeness - raspberries, cherries, and stone fruit - without going over the top into cooked fruit. (JC)

Wine Spectator
A fleshy core of lightly mulled raspberry, plum and red currant fruit flavors cruises through, backed by ample licorice, singed cedar and dried garrigue notes. Finely beaded acidity adds latent energy to the finish. (JM)

Vinous
Vivid magenta. Intense, mineral-accented red berry preserve, spicecake and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of smoky minerals and garrigue. Juicy, seamless raspberry liqueur and cherry flavors become deeper and sweeter while maintaining urgency. Shows solid thrust on the sweet, red-fruit-dominated finish, which is framed by gentle, slow-building tannins. (JR)

K&L Notes
Domaine Giraud is under the stewardship of brother-sister team François and Marie Giraud taking over the primary roles from their monther and father. François handles the vineyards and Marie oversees the winemaking. Committed to organic farming since 2011, the winery continues to make some of the most excititng and forward Grenache dominant Châteauneufs. The "Tradition" is 2/3 Grenache with the rest made up of Syrah and Mourvèdre. Vines range between 50-80 years old on clay-limestone soils with galets (the big rolled stones) on the surface. Fermentation is in stainless steel and concrete tanks. Grenache and Mourvèdre are aged in concrete and Syrah ages in French oak.
