2019 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough

SKU #1463346 94 points Sam Kim

Outer quote mark Offering fabulous varietal purity and vibrancy, the wine shows green rockmelon, Gala apple, jalapeno and lime peel aromas on the nose with a hint of oatmeal complexity. It's delightfully weighted and persistent with fine texture and bright acidity, making it immediately appealing. Deliciously stylish. At its best: now to 2024. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Outer quote mark Fresh, crisp, high-energy sauvignon blanc with appealingly pure lemongrass, lime juice, gooseberry and capsicum flavours. A refreshing wine from a hot, dry vintage where many wines lacked acidity. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Outer quote mark While TWR is celebrated more for its beautiful aromatic whites like Riesling and Pinot Gris, the latest Sauvignon is a young yet well-balanced drop. Notes of relatively ripe peach and citrus fruit run along a spine of green bell pepper and that feline funk typical to this style and region. On the palate, complexity is added to the bright citrus fruit and zingy acidity via a chalky texture. This is a solid and unforced SB that speaks, not shrieks, of its origins. Another year or two in bottle should add a whole new dimension here. Inner quote mark (12/2020)

Outer quote mark While TWR calls the Wairau Valley home, it sources 75% of its fruit from the cooler, windier Awatere Valley for this cuvée, which is likely responsible for the elderflower-like and citrus fruit character here. It also offers pineapple fruit flavors, nettles and a thiol-derived flinty element that lingers on the finish. One-eighth of the wine is barrel-fermented, giving additional weight and roundness to what is a light-bodied, fresh style. You can enjoy its precision and purity in youth, but there's no hurry. I have been talking a lot about how strong I think the 2019 vintage for Sauvignon Blanc is for Marlborough, NZ. The long, dry hot spell that occurred over the summer leading up to harvest is showing fruit and ripeness that exceeds anything in recent memory. Smaller producers who could get their grapes off the vine early managed to get plenty of bold, ripe flavors while keeping bright acidity intact. Te Whare Ra executed this perfectly. They picked on March 1st of 2019, which was the earliest they have ever harvested. It absolutely shows in the glass. Never has there been such a pure, clean note of green apple, lime, and grapefruit, with beautiful aromatic bouquet on display. The lees contact is evident, and incredibly well-executed with substantial weight and hints of creme fraiche. A touch more forward for this producer, this has tons of vintage character and is representative of the best of Marlborough.
