2017 Turtle Rock "Claude's Cuvee" Paso Robles Red Blend

SKU #1461960 97 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2017 Claude's Cuvée is an interesting blend of 52% Syrah, 22% Grenache, 10% Mataro, 8% Tempranillo, and 8% Carignan that was raised mostly in French oak. It offers a more earthy, meaty bouquet of spiced black fruits, cedarwood, leafy herbs, and herbed meat. Beautifully textured and full-bodied, it offers ripe, polished tannins and a great, great finish. It ranks with the best of the best and will cruise for a decade in cool cellars. Inner quote mark

Outer quote mark The medium to deep ruby colored 2017 Claude's Cuvée is mainly Syrah, blended with smaller amounts of Grenache, Mataro and Carignan. It was made with 41% whole cluster and aged 22 months in 70% new oak. It has an appealingly "cool climate" perfume of white pepper, mint chocolate, blackcurrants, fresh violets and a core of blackberries and blueberries. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegant, super fresh and restrained, with a grainy frame and still tightly wound finish. This is lovely! (EB) 94+ Inner quote mark (2/2020)

K&L Notes

"There are few estates in California today that are more exciting than Don Burns’ Turtle Rock. Pulling from some of the top vineyards on the westside of Paso Robles and making the wines as Justin Smith’s Saxum estate, Burns has consistently produced some of the wines of the vintage since his first releases in 2014. As I wrote in the past, readers interested in finding the next up and coming superstar in Paso Robles need to put Don and Claudia Burns’ Turtle Rock estate at the top of their list." - Jeb Dunnuck

Do you love wines from Saxum but don't want to pay Saxum prices? Then you should check out Turtle Rock! Claude's Cuvee is a Rhone style blend with a little bit of Spanish wine influence added, comprised of three separate vineyards in Paso including the famed James Berry vineyard. Claude's Cuvee is big, rich ready to drink now, but could definitely benefit from cellaring a couple years down the road. I'm tempted to buy a few bottles myself to see how much this wine evolves over time. Definitely worthy of a try for those who love big rend blends and Paso Robles wines in general.

The Turtle Rock wines are turning heads in the wine world. Not since the early days of Saxum and Linne Calodo has a winery sparked such a round of enthusiasm for Paso Robles. While most closely similar to a Rhone style red, this blend is pure Paso. For lovers of bold, rich, and robust wines, the Turtle Rock wines are a must have. At about $60 a bottle they’re actually a steal when compared to peers. Don Burns and his Turtle Rock winery have kicked it up a notch and this is clearly the most important new Paso winery to watch. I give this a strong “buy” recommendation.
