2016 Peter Franus "Brandlin Vineyard" Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $75)

SKU #1459676 95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Brandlin Vineyard is positively stellar. Inky dark blue and purplish fruit, lavender, jasmine and sweet spice notes are pushed forward. The 2016 melds together rich, inky fruit with plenty of Mt. Veeder savoriness that lurks below. Ample and creamy in feel with terrific resonance, the 2016 has so much to offer. 91 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A fresh red showing blackcurrants, elderberries, cassis and mint. Focused and minerally on the palate with medium-chewy tannins and a lithe finish. Drink now. Inner quote mark (5/2019)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Brandlin Vineyard (100% Cabernet) sings of baked cherries, mulberries, cassis and dark chocolate with hints of Provence herbs and tilled earth. Medium-bodied, it has a chewy texture and lively, crunchy black fruit, finishing with good length. (LPB) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

K&L Notes

Winemaker Peter Franus is a veteran of the industry and has been intimately connected with Mount Veeder for many decades. Peter was appointed Head Winemaker at Mount Veeder Winery in 1981 and his tenure ran until 1992. After that Peter dedicated his efforts on his own fledgling eponymous label but has continued to work with Veeder fruit ever since, including a remarkable 26 years working with fruit from Brandlin Vineyard.

This combination of factors doesn't come along all that often so don't miss this total sleeper of the vintage. Peter Franus started his wine making career at Mount Veeder Winery back in the 1980s. After more than a decade in that role he started his own eponymous label with a continued focus on wines from Mount Veeder. Peter has been working with the highly regarded Brandlin Vineyard for more that 30 years. All this pedigree and experience is abundantly clear in this 2016 bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon that for me is a benchmark expression of classic mountain-grown Napa Cabernet. This wine is packed full of cassis, blueberry and blackberry fruit; whiffs of lavender, cedar wood, cigar box and warm earth. Medium plus bodied with fine but structural tannin; this is clearly a wine that can age but it is very expressive and giving even at this youthful stage. If you have enjoyed wines such as Mayacamas, Robert Craig, Mt Brave - you need to check out this wine. It offers outstanding value for a wine of exceptional quality and refinement. If you need more convincing check out Galloni's glowing 95 point review!

Brandied red and black cherry, cassis, blueberry compote, and ripe black fig take center stage on the nose of this rich mountain Cab. Add to that additional notes of sweet tobacco, cedar, licorice, mocha, baking spices, vanilla, toffee, and a touch of pine straw, and you've got another complex, layered standout from the spectacular 2016 vintage. Silky textured yet perfectly focused and balanced, this is just as easily a winter evening sipping wine as it is a steakhouse star. Drinks better than many Napa Cabs costing twice the price.
