Tangerine, lemon confit, almond, dried herbs and tropical overtones give the 2016 a lot of character. In the glass, the 2016 is a bit wild and unruly, yet it is also full of character. The 2016 need time to settle down, but it is very pretty. The Domaine Eden Chardonnay is roughly 2/3rds from the Domaine Eden property, and 1/3rd barrels culled out from Mount Eden. This is a truly special deal on one of the finest examples of California Chardonnay you'll find anywhere near this price point! Our long relationship with Jeffrey and Ellie at Mount Eden means that thankfully when they have a few cases they want to move through they often offer them up to us! For the uninitiated, the Domaine Eden label is predominantly from a second property that Mount Eden purchased several years back that sits just below the original estate and was previously Cinnabar Winery. Whilst this estate produces spectacular fruit of its own...this years Domaine Eden Chardonnay is made all the more exciting as is also contains 35% of Mount Eden fruit! No wonder it's so delicious! The wine is filled with crisp orchard fruits, golden delicious apple, peach, and nectarine. Notes of warm bread, roasted chestnuts, and powerful stony minerals add a savory, umami complexity to the pristine fruit. Rarely would you expect to find such layered complexity in a wine of this price point...but then again...rarely would you find this wine at this price point! A couple years in bottle have really helped this wine and I think it's in peak drinking condition as the flavors unfurl beautifully in the glass. The bright acidity and good portion of Mount Eden fruit also leads me to believe it will continue to drink well for another 3-5 years comfortably. Get it while it lasts as this very sharp price.

There has been a parade of great deals on California Chardonnay lately, but this is the wine that I was the most excited to see. It's not the bottle that screams for attention in a flight, but instead it has a rare Old World sensibility in California. The character is feminine and corseted, with a cool precision and length which balances on a needlepoint of acidity. After the wine breathes for a while, the strings start to loosen a little bit and there are echoes of the Mount Eden first wine, which for my money, is the finest estate Chardonnay in North America. But even as the second estate, the Domaine Eden will gain breadth with a few years of cellaring and the demure character will reveal more of its graces. This is a nice introduction to the style for an attractive admission price.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.

- Vineyards dot the valleys and ridges of this coastal AVA just south of San Francisco. Microclimates make it difficult to generalize, and vineyards are frequently separated by acres of forests and meadowlands (not to mention entire towns!), but this is nonetheless known as a cooler-climate zone ideal for pinot noir. Ridge is doubtless the most famous local producer, with its cabernet blend, Monte Bello, named after a Santa Cruz mountain peak. High-quality, low-production chardonnay and some Rhône varietals prosper as well.
