The 2018 Cabernet Franc is dark, rich and super-expressive. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, leather, licorice and a whole range of floral/savory notes show tremendous depth. Despite having been bottled just prior to this tasting, the 2018 is incredibly appealing. The combination of intense fruit and the classically-leaning style favored by Lieu Dit yields a Franc of real distinction. In the early going, the sulfured version is a bit more expressive than the Sans Soufre, which is unusual, as the opposite is usually true. (AG) (9/2019)
The Loire Valley-inspired Lieu Dit label is a collaboration between Tyler Winery’s Justin Willett and sommelier Eric Railsback. Their 2018 Santa Ynez Valley Cabernet Franc is lifted, high-toned and earthy. Aromas of sous-bois, green pepper and wet flowers. Crunchy and bright red fruit notes refresh the palate, where dried tobacco, tomato leaf and citrus peel notes hang on the finish. A tasteful, accurate homage to old-world Cabernet Franc.
