This Ta Mata Bullnose vinyard Syrah has been haunting me. The nose is black pepper, blackberry, black dahlia and R C cola. The flavor is a juxtaposition to the nose. Red currant, red cherry and the black pepper spice. good structure. Bring on the glazed pork chop! Well done.

Truly world-class Syrah by any measure. This wine has a long and flawless pedigree. It combines the wonderfully exotic, explosive, aromatic elements of fine Syrah - violets, forest berries, ripe plum - and supports them with deep, brooding, savory notes of earth, black pepper and smoked meat. Open and expressive right now but also possessing plenty of concentration and structure to age well. I still have a few bottles of 2009 in my cellar and they are drinking fabulously. Another fantastic edition of the legendary Bullnose.

Hawke’s Bay Syrah continues to be a source of extraordinary wines for people in the know. Wines with tiny production like Trinity Hill’s Homage and Bilancia La Colline Syrahs have been nailing down massive scores over the last few years and making a name for themselves as worthy of world class respect. Enter Te Mata’s Bullnose Syrah. Made from the oldest Syrah vines in Hawke’s Bay, Te Mata’s Syrah vines had an excellent growing season that has resulted in a powerful, concentrated wine that may be the finest Syrah I’ve ever had from New Zealand. The aromas show classic varietal character with savory notes, earth, black pepper and lavender. This gives way to a beautifully decadent palate with black cherry, sour plum, followed up with exotic spices over resonating tannin. Focused and powerful, this is remarkably accessible right now, but sure to be even better in the coming years. And with identical scores to last year’s Trinity Hill Homage, this wine is a steal at half the price.

We are fortunate in our ability here at K&L to experience great wines on a regular basis, it's both informative and exciting because you get introduced to bottles you wouldn't normally look at on your own. Syrah from regions other than France don't pop up in my life as often as I would like, and there is nothing more exciting than when you get handed a random glass of something and fall in love before knowing anything about it. Bullnose is such a bright and focused bottle of wine, it jumps out of the glass with dark fruit, purple flowers, anise, clove, black pepper with a hint of menthol and praline.The palate is luscious and decadent. The fruit is more pointed than on the nose so the wine doesn't feel overly opulent, rather more balanced and lively. Blackberry, baking spice, pepper, savory soy and violet. Our Syrah fans need to try this bottle, and if you aren't a Syrah drinker, well you're going to want to start!

This is a wine that you need to pay attention to. This bottling of Syrah proclaims that Hawkes Bay is one of the great Terroirs for Syrah in the world. I cannot wait to try this every year. I cannot wait to buy this every year. Bright, savory, and textural this wine is a pleasure for the sense. Bright, sappy red fruits that pop and are lifted and have depth. Behind the fruit is a pleasant smoky and savoriness. The tannins are polished and fine and there is an easiness to the texture, not quite supple but almost. There is a freshness to this, there is a lot going on here but it is never fatiguing, in fact I found myself going back to it, again and again, try to get more and finding it.

New Zealand's Hawke's Bay produces a handful of world class wines, but none so thoroughly prove the worth of place as the Bullnose. Complex, rich, opulent, and elegant, the nose is unreal, with flavors layered on top of each other to incredible depth. Ripe strawberry, rose petals, iron, and almond cake all come crashing out of the glass in a glorious melange that serves perfect introduction to the cheerful palate; which frames the continuation of flavors with strong acidity and polished, satin tannins. Just fire.

The nose of this wine was scintillating…and I don’t use that word for New World Syrah wines very often, in fact I think never. Waves of coffee, chocolate, cassis and combine with the subtlest of sweet oak (and I’m very sensitive to oak) while still showing hints of spice and earth. On the palate the wine is so well balanced, rich, polished and ultrafine tannins to give it an extraordinarily smooth presence. The wine has so many different flavors but seem to combine into one, so it is its own flavor rather than a combination and it is delicious. Long, lifting finish, richly textured so supple and easy yet a certain tensile strength to it…it is really wonderful.

For me, Te Mata is the number one producer in New Zealand, and this Syrah shows you why in a nutshell. It has a beautiful bouquet of red currants, briary fruits and violets that just keeps my nose in the glass. The new world purity-of-fruit is balanced by subtle earthy undertones on the palate, vibrant acidity and a precision and elegance that go through the long and satisfying finish. This is entirely drinkable now, but has the structure to age too!

This is a lovely Syrah from Hawke's Bay. The nose has a beautiful fruit and spice combo, that continues on the palate and on to the finish. It is well balanced. The plump fruit is spicy and the acid is soft yet consistent.

This is a fantastic expression of Syrah. Strong structure with elegant fruit; a really lovely combo to see what happens in the years to come. The fruits come across as dark red and black, with some purple fruited notes. There's a delightfully long finish that has the fruit elements as well as a soft touch of meatiness.

Te Mata has long been one of my top go-to's for reds out of New Zealand, and this Syrah only further supports my undying love for them. This is a powerhouse of a wine with no shortage of acid and structure. New Zealand has the ultimate climate for bold, powerful Syrahs and Hawke's Bay has long been recognized for their ideal conditions regarding this varietal. Dark fruited with plenty of spice (that I'm very happy to say is not smothered by oak) and a long finish define this wine and make it the perfect accompaniment to a rack of lamb. I would probably hold onto this for a year or two to let it tone down a bit, but definitely wouldn't turn it away now with a little decanting.
