Very delicate on the nose, this bottling offers aromas of nectarine, white-melon flesh, a hint of melon rind and light lemon spray. The palate is extremely textural, offering subtle flavors of lemon cream, chalk, lemongrass, ash and Brie rind that will live forever. Drink now through 2042. *Cellar Selection* (MK)

From the site that started it all in the Sta. Rita Hills, Chanin’s 2017 Sanford & Benedict was sourced from the original vines planted in 1971. It spent 16 months in 15% new French oak and 275 cases were produced. The nose has a flashy and rugged quality to it, with notes of fennel pollen, tangerine zest and crushed stones. The palate is both powerful and spry, and the finish calls back the rocky notes from the nose. An intriguing and complete showing of a historic site. (ML)

Lastly, the 2017 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict comes from a Grand Cru site in the Sta. Rita Hills and spent 15 months in 15% new French oak. More classic apple and caramelized stone fruits, white flowers, crushed rocks, and spice emerge from this beauty and it's supple, layered, and balanced on the palate, with both richness and freshness. It's already drinking beautifully but has the balance and class to keep for 8-10 years, if not longer, in cool cellars.

Wine & Spirits
A complex old-vine chardonnay, this delivers a litany of flavors with spritzy precision: white flowers and sea air, lime salt, fennel frond and white peach, jasmine, acacia and smoke, to name just a few. They yield to a finish that’s soft, yellow and creamy, like lemon curd and diatomaceous earth, and like the light at Sanford & Benedict when the fog lifts, around noon.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From vines planted in the early 1970s, the 2017 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard has a youthfully restrained nose, slowly opening to toasted hazelnut, gunflint and stone with ripe white peach, red apple skin, citrus peel, pastry crust and baker's yeast hints. Light to medium-bodied with a silky, creamy texture, it has a great core of nuanced fruits with juicy acidity and a long, spicy, textured finish. 268 cases produced. (EB)

Vinous
The 2017 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is not giving up much today, as it is a ball of tightly wound energy. Even so, there is plenty of depth to the orchard fruit and floral notes that develop in the glass. Chanin's 2017, from the original 1971/1972 plantings is distinctly phenolic at this stage. There is as lot here, but the 2017 is a wine for the future. (AG)
