2007 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Rioja

SKU #1457491 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Following the appreciation of the 2007 vintage from María José López de Heredia, the red 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is showing great, revealing unusual finesse and elegance. The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2015. (LG) (6/2019)

This wine spends six years in barrique (tradtionally it needed six winters to stabilize naturally), before racking into large casks and then bottling three years before the expected release. Attractive, dark earth and dried sage with a strong aroma of attractive, rich dried cherries, as well as blackberries and hints of cedar, cigar tobacco and fresh leather. The palate has a smooth array of fine but quite powerful tannin that builds seamlessly into the long, rich, dark cherry-flavored finish. Great wine! Drink or hold. (7/2019)

Viña Tondonia is a collection of parcels centered on a rise above the Ebro River, where it forms a wide loop outside of Haro. The López de Heredia family farms these parcels as bush vines, blending their fruit into long-lived, vineyard-designated wines. This vintage, including 70 percent tempranillo and 20 percent garnacha with a little graciano and mazuelo, is a lovely, elegant Rioja in a classical mode. There is something magical about well-aged Rioja, and there is often something magical about Viña Tondonia, suggested by this wine’s gentle, lasting touch of bright, sunny cherry notes and deep earth tones, the flavors delicately saturated. Get some. (12/2019)

Greatness presents itself differently in different wines. The wines from Lopez de Heredia are in a class all by themselves. This wine a delicious now, the wine is twelve years old!, but it has a long future in front of it. Part of what makes this wine so great is that it is released at the beginning of its maturity. There is no question of what this wine will become, it is. What amazes me it how we can see what this wine will become with time, easily a decade from now, and then a decade after that. What wine on release gives you that? Most other wines you look to the future by subtraction (loss of fruit, settling of oak, and tannin) this wine will be all addition (more savory, more spice, more leather). There is no guesswork, it is all there right now. That is why these wines are so special. This is a wine of complexity, subtlety, depth and energy. Tasting this wine sets a high bar for 2020. I look forward to the new year and future enjoyment of this wine.

An icon wine in any vintage, the 2007 Tondonia has style to burn, with a dusty, cracked pepper spice and exotic earth notes woven into the sweet red fruit underbelly, integrated over the long thirteen years it has waited to be released. The finish is wild, with the spice noted pushing forward emphatically but gently fading away as the round tannins and pretty red fruit notes take the closing sequence. Another example of the elite winemaking at Lopez de Heredia.

While the nose has generous amounts of dried cherries and raspberries with hints of fresh fruit showing through, there's also a hint of menthol and subtle green peppercorn. The palate has bright acidity with fresher fruits than the nose, albeit the same fruits in the bouquet. It has a clean and lingering finish. This would be an amazing wine for a rich meal or a hard cheese and cured meat plate.

Vina Tondonia is not only one of the world's greatest wines, it's one of the most affordable. The 2007 vintage is terrific. It's a concentrated wine with tremendous finesse and purity. There is a great earthiness to balances very sweet red fruits and it has lively acidity and freshness without being prickly. One of my favorite vintages in a long time, and I've loved nearly every previous vintage I've ever tried. While this is gorgeous now, like all Lopez de Heredia wines, it could certainly age in your cellar for years to come. It's the best of both worlds for any wine collector.
