2017 Domaine de l'Amandine Côtes du Rhône-Villages Seguret

SKU #1457260 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This estate is emerging as one of the more interesting producers of Séguret. The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret, a cement-aged 60-40 blend of Syrah and Grenache, boasts floral, garrigue-like notes, plus ripe cherries and stone fruit. Full-bodied, lush and downright sexy, it's packed with fruit yet remains silky, fresh and long on the finish. (JC) (11/2018)

K&L Notes

L'Amandine was established in 1968 by Jean-Pierre Verdeau who followed the tradition of winemaking in his family. Born in the region, Jean-Pierre continues to work in the vineyards and is now joined by his son-in-law, Alex Suter (whose father was the vineyard manager of Rustenberg winery in South Africa). They work together to build on the successes of the past and look to the future. Seguret is one of the most picturesque villages in the southern Rhône, built into the hillside and overlooking the surrounding vineyards. The soils are made up of primarily clay and sandstone with limestone scree scattered throughout the vineyards. The winery still uses the concrete tanks that Jean-Pierre installed by hand back in the day with a few new ones added as they have slowly expanded their holdings. The Seguret is made up of Syrah and Grenache, is destemmed and is aged all in concrete tanks. The results are a bright fleshy red fruited wine that shows great purity and the typicity of this lovely region.

This higher altitude estate continues its string of excellent wines with the release of the 2017. It offers the ideal balance of ripe fruit and freshness that is sometimes a bit more difficult in a warm year along with a touch of fresh herbs and the complexity we've come to expect from this winery. Lovers of Rhone wines will not want to miss this gem.

We're all pretty stoked to have the L'Amandine back - especially considering how great the wine turned out! A perfect example of when hearty (almost meaty) flavors and bright red fruit meet, this Seguret beauty is full-bodied, silky, and has an aromatic profile that CANNOT be ignored. At $14.99 this CDR really should not be passed up and might be my new go-to wine for casual weeknight meals.

Jammy, fruity, red berries and hints of dark cherry and plum on the nose. This silky red has much going for it in terms of tannins, mouth-feel and structure. Allow some time for this beautiful red to open up and breath.., then be amazed by the forward berry flavors that dance on your tongue and open up your airwaves as you inhale the fruity aromas arising from the glass. Sip and enjoy now~ Cheers!

An elegant and understated nose slowly opens as you allow it to fill the glass, the perfume of this wine is delicate but absolutely lovely. Bright red fruits wrap around a darker core of macerated bramblefruits. The palate refined while the darker core presents itself much more readily, chewier and earthy with a lingering finish. There's more than enough acid to make this a very friendly wine to pair against. For the price-point this is a drop-dead amazing deal, and a wonderful entry point for Côtes du Rhône.

Seguret is one of those Cotes du Rhone Villages to watch. It may not earn the same acclaim as Rasteau or Vacqueyras, but its certainly on par with the top Crus and probably next on the list to receive cru status. The aromatics on this wine are drop-dead gorgeous. Seriously. You need to smell this. Floral and fruity, with latent savory undertones and a clear expression of garrigue, this is incredibly explosive. The palate follows up in lock step, with plenty of bright fruit, medium concentration and seamless texture. Wow, well done Keith. That is one hell of a wine for $15.

L'Amandine is back! A fan favorite here at K&L, and this vintage will be no exception! Plush red fruits of summer strawberries, and smoked red plums complement the wild Mediterranean scrub brush, and crushed purple flowers. The sweet tannins intermingle on palate, and dance along through the long finish. An outstanding wine for an even more outstanding price. Excuse me while I whip up some burgers for this bad boy.

One of my favorite additions to our Rhone portfolio comes from this humble little estate just below the picturesque village of Seguret. I met winemaker Alex Suter and his daughter Mathilde a couple of years ago and this family driven and generously spirited winery were the perfect fit for our Direct Import program. The wines were an immediate success as we quickly sold through both the 2015 and 2016 Seguret bottlings. The 2017 builds on the rich and supple fruit we saw in the previous releases and you can see in the wine now that Alex has taken on more of the winemaking duties and day-to-day operations. It is a pure expression of Seguret with supple strawberry and red plum fruit surrounded by notes of smoky meats and garrigue. The palate is balanced and pure. Another tremendous effort from this family operation that continues to build on its past while still delivering wonderful value.

I must second my colleague Greg’s comments regarding the “plush, smoky, raw meat kind of nose…” There’s a real sauvage and wild character at play here. These added dimensions take this wine down a slightly different path than the mainstream. You get a whole other panoply of nuances to consider out of this glass. Don’t get me wrong, I really like this wine. It’s simply fascinating. And…it’s an amazing value!

The nose has a plush, smoky, raw meat kind of nose that is spiced with wild cherries and some middle eastern spice. On the palate it is round and full gliding over your tongue. There’s lots of plumy ripeness here but it is balanced by balanced sweet tannins and an assortment of earth and dried herbs. The wine has a long finish that shows off the bold richness and vivid flavors. Quite a lot of wine for the price!
