93 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Rudy von Strasser’s latest blend, from a range of sources on Diamond Mountain, is a knockout. Since he sold his estate vineyard, he has rejiggered this wine; for 2016, he focused on the most concentrated lots in his cellar. The wine has a range of fresh wild-berry flavor, clean, pure notes of blackberries, mulberries and blueberries that completely saturate the earthiness of the tannins. The fruit incorporates those rocky tannins into an overall impression that’s gentle and rich. Fresh, floral and substantial, this is approachable as a young wine and beautifully balanced for a long life ahead. Inner quote mark (12/2019)

Unquestionably one of the greatest values in Napa Valley Cabernet. Sorry...not just Napa Valley Cabernet...Diamond Mountain Cabernet! At this price?! Many of you that have been shopping with K&L for a while will know that we have had a long history with this winery. A quick check of our database reveals we have carried 144 different wines from Von Strasser going all the way back to the 1993 Diamond Mountain Cab, just their third ever vintage. Rudy Von Strasser got his start making wine at Robert Mondavi in 1980. After studying at UC Davis, in 1985 Rudy became the first American to work in the hallowed cellars of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Bordeaux. In 1990 Rudy and his wife Rita bought a piece of property directly adjacent to Diamond Creek that they new had the potential to produce wold-class Cabernet. To this day Rudy continues to be synonymous with this heralded mountain terroir. Despite the Von Strasser wines' proven ability to age for decades, this 2016 bottling is fully approachable in its youth with intense red and black fruits, ripe currant, cassis, and huckleberry. Lovely varietal tobacco notes, subtle Bay Laurel and cedar. Medium plus bodied, fine, precise tannin that isn't at all astringent. Fantastic balance and purity. Nothing is over done or forced, it's just real class and pedigree. Unbelievable quality for this special K&L exclusive price point. Drink now or over the next 10-15 years and maybe beyond.

This is another absolute beauty from Rudy von Strasser. The nose presents a gorgeous mix of black raspberry, currant, and blueberry framed by sweet tobacco leaf, cedar, mocha, red rose, leather, baking spices, vanilla, and licorice root. It stays every bit as harmonious and poised on the palate while fine-grain tannins provide the structure to age well or stand up to steakhouse fare. Really shows a lot of elegance combined with plenty of richness and power. A great example from the truly stellar 2016 vintage.
