Chenin Blanc is one of those grapes that can take limitless forms. In the Loire, it is traditionally used to make everything from brilliant bubblers to deep, heady dessert wines. I loved the take on Chenin from Finlayson. This is powerful, bold stuff. The richness of the wine is apparent from outset, with beeswax, honey comb and lemon curd, leading to a weighty and textured palate. The sweetness of the fruit was so prominent, for a few moments I questioned whether it had residual sugar on it. More Chardonnay-esque than Sauvignon Blanc, this is an incredibly serious Chenin that is one of the best examples I’ve tasted from Stellenbosch.
