2017 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre"

SKU #1452481 95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru shows why this site is so highly regarded. Even with all of the challenges of the growing season, all of the personality of this 1er Cru comes through loud and clear. Pale in color yet remarkably deep, the 2017 offers up a compelling mélange of citrus and orchard fruits perked up by bright acids and striking floral overtones. Weightless yet powerful, with explosive energy and superb balance... Readers who can find it should not hesitate. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Outer quote mark As the vineyard of Montée de Tonnerre was one of the most-affected premier crus by the April frosts, I was worried this wine might show as a bit of an outlier stylistically in the lineup, but the wine was racy and absolutely classical in profile. The bouquet is very precise and complex, soaring from the glass in a fine blaze of pear, lime, kaleidoscopic limestone minerality, white flowers, citrus zest and a nice topnote of beeswax. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied and properly reserved structurally, with a rock solid core, great mineral drive, bright, snappy acids and laser-like focus on the very long and very electric finish. This is an outstanding bottle of Montée de Tonnerre in the making. 2022-2050. Inner quote mark (12/2019)

Outer quote mark Very attractive, fresh peach and lemon aromas here with some gentle, biscuit and pastry-like, savory nuances. The palate has very expressive and mouth-filling white peaches and lemons with toasted-hazelnut flavors that warm the long, succulent finish. An excellent Montée. Drink or hold. Outer quote mark An elegant, pure and airy nose combines notes of white flowers, citrus, lemon-lime and plenty of classic Chablis character. There is also excellent volume, density and power to the refined medium-bodied flavors that presently are not quite as complex as they usually are on the lingering finish. The underlying material however appears to be first-rate and as such my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that more depth will develop with time. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding* Inner quote mark (10/2018)

K&L Notes

93-95 points Jasper Morris for Inside Burgundy: "Just 50 hl from 2.20ha, so the volume is well down. Fine bright pure with an underlying concentration and much more spice. Not a rich fruit sunshine but a spicy one. Immense intensity behind. Keeps coming back. This delivers a huge mouthful, almost more characteristic of a red wine rather than the sort of Chablis one might pair with a crustacean." (01/2019)
