Calera is one of the most legendary producers in California. After spending time exploring the wine regions of Europe (including a stint at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC) in the early 1970's, founder Josh Jensen returned to California determined to produce world-class Pinot Noir. He bought the high-elevation site on the slopes of Mt. Harlan for its limestone rich soils. The rest is history. Calera has produced some of the most high touted bottlings of Pinot Noir ever to be made in California. With the help of Mike Waller (winemaker for the past decade) the wines have seldom faltered in four decades. In 2017 a new chapter began for Calera when Josh sold the company to Duckhorn. Thankfully the Duckhorn folks know a thing or two about great vineyards and winemaking and the wines continue to flourish under new ownership and the seasoned Waller is still at the helm in the cellar. Now to this wine specifically, the first Pinot released in the new era, and what a stunner. This is hands down the best Central Coast bottling I've tasted from Calera in 10 years. The quality of the fruit from vineyards such as Bien Nacido, Solomon Hills and Garys' to name but a few, is all seamlessly woven into a very complete bottle of wine that has to be one of the best values in the WORLD of Pinot Noir. Our razor sharp price compounds that fact making this a true must buy. Very impressive stuff.

Light to medium-bodied with supple hints of cherries. The tannins are grippier than I would've imagined and I suspect this is what I like to call a "Day Two Wine." That's a wine that blossoms as it breathes and really comes to life.

Just the fainest hint of spice edges the ripe fruit and dark green botanical undertones of this killer bottle of wine. Rich in a more sophisticated way than I maybe expected from their declassified offerings, this is clearly still Calera, but has a good bit of universality to it. The meaty, saline finish has a nice length and is just incredible pleasant. Pairs wonderfully with an afternoon in Golden Gate Park and soft goat cheese

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.
