2015 Villa Poggio Salvi Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1448600 93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Boysenberry crumble, black raspberries, licorice, treacle tart, forest floor and iron shavings are out in style. There’s pretty crunchiness to the acidity and the tannins have a chalky, spicy feel. Medium-to full-bodied and refined. Drink from 2021. Inner quote mark (9/2019)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This red offers aromas of baked plum, exotic spice, blue flower and new leather. The tight palate reflects the nose, featuring additional tones of dried black cherry, licorice and tobacco alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. (KO) Inner quote mark (5/2020)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Bright red. Clean aromas and flavors of red fruit, tar and licorice. Then youthfully chewy but with polished tannins nicely providing backbone to the red fruit and herb flavors. Finishes with hints of coffee and balsamic herbs, and with excellent length. (ID) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

K&L Notes

91 points Eric Guido for Vinous: "The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a mix of savory and sweet, with intense crushed cherry, cedar spice box, and dusty minerals, giving way to undergrowth and hints of sage. On the palate, silky textures are contrasted by intense, tart red berry, cranberry, and spice, with saturating tannins balanced by brisk acids. The finish is long, youthfully austere and tart, as hints of cranberry, saturating spice and saline-minerals slowly fade, leaving a twang of zesty acids." (04/2020)

Every time I smell this wine, I say to myself now that is a classic Brunello nose. The nose is full of wild cherry, leather, earth hints of soy, iron and Tuscan dust. It is immediately evident when on the palate that this wine is old school, you feel the tannic structure first, never harsh but just as a backbone then the fruit, earth and spice play out across your palate, this isn’t a smooth, supple, sweetish feel this feels classic. The finish is long, balanced that shows real elegance and depth of flavor and in this vintage is a superb example of Villa Poggio Salvi at its’ best. The winery’s elevation, high up on a ridge facing the western breeze, provides a fresher climate than many of their counterparts and in this riper vintage still shows a classic restraint but the rich fruit is now pressed against the framing tannins. Decant now for a couple of hours or best from 2025 on.
