2017 Martin Ray Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

SKU #1448026 93 points James Suckling

There’s a pure subtlety to this Pinot Noir with ripe strawberries, lemons and light tar. Medium to full body, integrated and lightly chewy tannins and a savory finish. Why wait? Drink now. (11/2018)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Aromas and flavors of rhubarb and pomegranate dominate in this well-made, simply structured wine. It is softly layered in oak and balanced by bright acidity and juicy ripeness. (VB) (7/2019)

A pretty serious contender for best value Pinot Noir in the store. I taste a lot of wines in my role at K&L and I'm happy to go on record here and say that this wine could show up a lot of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs 2-3 times this price point. It's truly the real deal. Not just simple, fruity generic Pinot...this actually tastes like Sonoma Coast and has the polish and style of a much more expensive wine. Brambly red fruits, earthy spices, forest floor, and subtle but classy oak. Expansive on the palate whilst remaining elegant and graceful. Has that truly remarkable quality to be ripe and fruity yet savory and earthy at the same time. The texture on the palate feels effortless and pure. Seriously classy Pinot for a very "everyday" price point.

This is a super elegant Pinot that shows a level of refinement well above its modest price point. I've been impressed by this bottling in the past, and the 2017 is another big winner. For those who enjoy a bit more of a Burgundian style (more nuance, less extraction) you'll find a lot to love at a price that's rare for Pinot of this caliber.
