2018 Hartford Court Russian River Valley Chardonnay

SKU #1447811 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This is an outstanding appellation wine, made in larger quantities at a remarkably fair price. Grapes come from throughout the diverse valley and the wine barrel fermented and given nine months to rest. Full bodied, layered and widely appealing, it shows a density of peach, pear, baking spice and sweet oak, all of the components coming together seamlessly at the end. *Editors’ Choice* (VB) Inner quote mark (7/2020)

Outer quote mark Leading off the Chardonnays (there are two early release 2018s), the appellation 2018 Chardonnay Russian River Valley is a great introduction into the wines of this estate and has a richer, expansive, medium to full-bodied style offering lots of golden apple, musky pineapple, brioche, and honeysuckle aromas and flavors. Inner quote mark (5/2020)

92 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Luscious, rich and full of creamy white fruit flavors flanked by buttery accents. Spicy plushness lingers into the finish, with some honeyed notes. (KM, Web Only-2020) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Already bottled, the 2018 Chardonnay Russian River Valley sings of fresh Bosc pears, white peaches and pink grapefruit with hints of powdered ginger, shaved almonds and white pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate has great vibrancy and juiciness with effortless fruit expression and lovely savory layers on the finish. I wish all Chardonnays at this price point tasted this good! Imagine yourself on a sunny Spring day relaxing in a green field under the shade of a blossoming orange tree. You bite down into a juicy green pear, as a gentle cool breeze wafts over aromas of the recently drizzled landscape under your nose, refreshing, and clean, it invigorates all of your senses. In short, this is how I felt after tasting Hartford Court's Russian River Chardonnay, uplifted, alive, completely in balance.

I arrived to work early the day our domestic buyer was tasting with Jeff Stewart and they graciously gave me a taste of a few wines in the lineup. This succulent Chardonnay was the standout. I went in for a second sip and let the plush texture coat my tongue for a few extra beats. Flavors of baked apples and pears dominate here, and the oak is present, but a blast of citrus and acid give the taste buds an invigorating and swift kick. There is a lot going on in this bottle and I'm impressed with how it finishes so impeccably clean, balanced, and fresh. A heavenly wine.

I had the opportunity to taste all the new Hartford Court releases with winemaker Jeff Stewart. We began with their Russian River Valley Chardonnay. As soon as I brought the wine to my nose I knew this was special. After tasting it the smile on my face must have revealed my enthusiasm. Jeff remarked as he smiled, “I think it’s the best one I ever made.” Put the name Kistler on the label and this is a 96 point wine! For Chardonnay lovers, this is perfection in a glass. There’s plenty of spiced apple and pear along with just a touch of lightly toasted oak. The wine is opulent and expressive and there’s plenty of acidity to keep it light on its feet as it glides across your palate. This is another world class effort from our friends at Hartford Court. Bravo!
