2018 Donnhoff Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1446891 99 points James Suckling

A dense and layered white with minerals, salt, white pepper, chalk, dried lemon and subtle pears. Pumice. Wow. Tiny film of oil. Creamy and insane. What a wine. Magic. One for the cellar. Drink or hold. (9/2019)

From a site of slate and porphyry facing the Nahe river and from Cornelius Dönnhoff's capable hands, this is an expression of stone and sun. A very scented nose of citric ripeness sets the tone. The palate is mild and fresh at the same time, pristine and vivid but beautifully balanced and ripe. Hints of juicy stone fruit shine through on the concentrated, svelte palate but the finish belongs entirely to lasting, refreshing zestiness. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040. (AK) (8/2019)

To my mind, the Dellchen often produces the most muscular Grosses Gewächs bottling from Weingut Dönnhoff, so I wondered how it might turn out this year, where there was already so much potential for power inherent in the vintage. Much to my surprise, the 2018 Dellchen is supremely elegant this year, offering up a sophisticated bouquet of sweet grapefruit, tart apple, wild yeasts, a beautiful base of minerality, orange blossoms and lemongrass. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, racy and utterly suave in its sense of balance and inner harmony, with bright acids and a very long, primary and promising finish. A great wine by any measure! (Drink between 2030-2070) (4/2019)

The 2018 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling trocken –GG– is brilliant, pure and fresh on the nose, with super ripe and dried white-fruit aromas on the nose. Round, lush and elegant on the palate, this is a rich yet elegant, pure and crystalline Riesling that tastes somewhat sweetish on the finish right now. Tasted three days after bottling in July 2019.(SR) (10/2019)

K&L Notes

92pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 29 19. The 2018er Dellchen Riesling GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, exhibits a quite aromatic nose made of pear, almond cream, canned yellow peach and candied pineapple as well as anise and butter. The wine conveys a great sense of fruity precision on the spicy and zesty palate and leaves a sharp feel full of tension in the finish. This fruit-driven yet racy expression of dry Riesling proves very enjoyable. 2022-2028." (10/2019)
