The 2018 Scharzhofberger Auslese (AP #8) is coolish, clear, intense and concentrated on the flinty and even rocky nose with its crunchy notes of broken slate and lemon juice. On the palate, this is a generous, highly elegant and refined, beautifully balanced and salty-crystalline Auslese with concentrated but detailed, elegant fruit, finely grained minerals and a long, complex finish. An impressive, great vin de terroir. Tasted in June 2019.(SR)

There is more botrytis character to the Scharzhofberger Auslese this year than in the Braune Kupp, and this is particularly evident on the more tropical touch found on the backend here. The nose is really refined and classy, wafting from the glass in a youthful blend of pear, lime zest, white cherries, a touch of mint, lilacs, honeycomb, gentle minerality and a wide array of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full, pure and complex, with a great core, impressive backend mineral drive and a long, zesty and beautifully balanced finish. This is going to take longer to fully blossom than the Braune Kupp Auslese, but it is going to be outstanding in the fullness of time. (Drink between 2032-2100)

White peach and white currant in jellied form are wreathed in thyme and mint and accompanied by a whiff of raw mushroom on an enticing nose and a glossy, faintly oily palate. Prominent sweetness is checked by an influx of fresh citrus, along with mouthwatering salinity. The vibrantly persistent finish introduces nippy aspects of green herbs as well as of botrytis spice. Like its counterpart from the Braune Kupp, this will need time to reveal its full stature. (DS)

K&L Notes
94 points Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 08 19. The 2018er Scharzhofberger Auslese was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (114 g/l). It delivers a rich yet elegant nose of whipped almond cream, candied vineyard peach, spices and pear. The wine is extremely rich and sweet on the palate at this early stage. Notes of mango, roasted pineapple and almond cream give the wine the full presence of a luscious Auslese lange GK. The finish is structured, intense and very long, yet also quite opulent. This impressive noble-sweet wine will need quite some time to absorb its residual sugar and could well exceed our high expectations as it develops its finesse with age. 2038-2068." (6/2019)
