2018 Egon Müller Scharzhof Riesling Mosel

SKU #1446534 John Gilman

Outer quote mark The 2018 Scharzhof QbA was bottled a bit earlier than anything else in the cellars this year, as the mise for this wine was on the last day of February of 2019. The wine carries twenty-eight grams of residual sugar this year and is 10.5 percent alcohol, so it is a bit fuller-bodied in personality than the 2017. However, the wine is lovely in 2018, offering up a classic nose of green apple, petrol, pear, wild yeasts and a fine base of slate minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full and nicely mineral in personality, with good, broad shoulders, fine cut and grip and a long, focused and nascently complex finish. Good juice. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Vinified in stainless steel, the 2018 Riesling Scharzhof (AP #1) is clear, ripe and quite intense on the nose that displays a delicate flinty bouquet. On the palate, this is an intensely fruity and quite rich Riesling that tastes nearly dry. Bottled in late February with 28 grams per liter of residual sugar and 10.5% alcohol, the 2018 is not as crystalline and fine as I remember older vintages. It's pretty charming already. Tasted in June 2019.(SR) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Vinous

Outer quote mark Gooseberry and crab apple on the nose turn tart, prickly and piquantly seed-tinged when they reemerge on a bracing, firm palate. This is not one of the many easygoing, generous, slightly soft 2018s! The finish is cheek-tugging, mouthwateringly salt-tinged and highly invigorating. (The source vineyards for this large cuvée are Saarburger Rausch, Wiltinger Braunfels and Wiltinger Rosenberg.) (DS) Inner quote mark (7/2020)

K&L Notes

90 points Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 01 19. The 2018er Scharzhof comes from the Estate’s holdings in the Wiltinger Braunfels, Wiltinger Rosenberg and Saarburger Rausch and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar (28 g/l). Slightly reductive at first, this wine delivers a beautiful nose of pear, yellow peach, spices, aniseed herbs and smoke. The wine proves deliciously fruity and creamy on the palate, and develops some zesty fruits in the fresh and light finish. The after-taste proves superbly spicy and smoky, and quite long. 2022-2033."
