2017 Brewer-Clifton Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay

SKU #1445375 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark One of the great values out there, the 2017 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills offers thrilling notes of white flowers, white peach, currants, and toasted bread. This ripe, sexy wine is unquestionably at the same level as the more expensive single vineyard releases, and it will evolve for just as long. Inner quote mark (10/2019)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Chardonnay (Sta. Rita Hills) is a gorgeous appellation-level wine from Brewer-Clifton. Creamy and ample, the 2017 is absolutely delicious. Tangerine, mint, lemon peel and sweet spice notes all meld together in a striking, nuanced Chardonnay that hits all the right notes. The 2017 is positively stellar. That's pretty much all there is to it. (AG) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

93 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This appellation blend carries that aromatic hallmark of this winery's Chardonnays, with a streak of walnut oil that decorates the marmalade and toast tones. The palate is bright in acidity, giving energy to the flavors of walnut paste, dried orange peel and sun-dried honeysuckle. (MK) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

Outer quote mark Very spicy and well-structured, with firm acidity supporting the ripe pear, apple tart and lemon meringue flavors. Concentrated dried mango accents linger on the finish, along with pastry and nutmeg notes. (KM) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

The fruit is the star of this wine and here it shines! Greg Brewer uses four sites for this wine that are also bottled separately: 3D, Machado, Acin, and Hapgood vineyards. All these sites are well situated and are planted to a variety of important clones. The result is a wine of exceptional finesse and complexity. To maintain the purity of fruit, Greg employs only neutral oak barrels which allows for a creamier texture while avoiding any oak flavors. Greg Brewer's Sta. Rita Hills appellation Chardonnay may be one of the best introductions to the region and the producer. We are now able to offer it at an "end of vintage" price making this quite possibly the best Chardonnay buy in the entire store.

Another absolute benchmark Chardonnay from acclaimed winemaker, Greg Brewer. Very reflective of his style, perfectly ripe fruit, powerful, focused palate, minimal oak and vibrant, racy acidity. Bursting with golden stone fruit, lemon curd, pie crust, ocean spray salinity and lingering mineral underpinnings. It's rich and flavorful but bright and zesty all at once. A perfectly judged wine that is entirely transparent and delicious. Another great addition to Greg's Brewer's significant body of work that has already cemented him as once of Santa Barbara's all-time great winemakers.

This is a textbook appellation-level expression of both the region and producer. Candied citrus rind, honeydew melon, white rose, sourdough, and chalk combine with hints of smokiness and toasted grain from the reductive winemaking style (no new oak used…only neutral barrels) on the nose. Zesty, intensely focused, and flavor-packed with brisk acidity, it is fabulous now, but will clearly age beautifully. A marriage of California coastal sunshine through a Chablis-like winemaking lens.
