2010 La Antigua Clasico Reserva Rioja

SKU #1445330 92 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark The 2010 La Antigua Clásico Rioja Reserva is another excellent wine from this superb bodegas, offering up a deep and very elegant bouquet of raspberries, cherries, Rioja spice tones, a bit of meatiness, lovely, stony soil tones, cloves and a hint of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and fairly broad-shouldered in style (this is predominantly Garnacha, with Tempranillo playing a supporting role in the cépages), with a fine core of fruit, ripe, suave tannins and excellent length and grip on the complex and bouncy finish. This wine is drinking quite well at age nine, but will be even better with another four or five years of bottle age. Fine juice. 92+ Inner quote mark (11/2018)

Outer quote mark Quite a traditional Rioja with red-fruit and milk-chocolate notes, medium-body, moderate tannins and a supple finish. Good harmony and length. Drink now or hold. Inner quote mark (8/2018)

Outer quote mark (60% French and 40% American oak barrels) Deep red. Lively smoke- and spice-accented cherry and red berry aromas are complemented by floral oil, game and pipe tobacco flourishes. Seamless and focused on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air. Shows very good energy and suave floral character on a long, fruit-driven finish that's given shape by well-integrated tannins. (JR) Inner quote mark (2/2019)

K&L Notes

A classic style Rioja produced from high elevation vineyards located in the Sierra de la Demanda area of the Rioja appellation. Old vines of Garnacha planted since 1940. Vines are tended in mineral soils of red silica, which are very unique and rare in Rioja.

This is an old vine Grenache dominated Rioja from foothills or Rioja Alta. This is 100% Rioja with a twist. The nose is Rioja dark savory with the warmth and inviting spice of the region. The palate is rounder, here is where you feel the grenache, it is rich and has plenty of stuffing and a long complex and very satisfying finish.

Built on a base of Grenache (60% Grenache finished out by 30% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano) this Rioja Alta wine stands alone in it's production. Exactly what you would want from a Rioja alta the wine is beautifully dusty and savory with notes of fig, plum, but made entirely unique by the clear orange peel finish that can only be brought by truly great Granache. I am a sucker for Rioja and when something unique like this comes in that checks all my boxes and then keeps adding to it, I can't help but be excited! Whether you are looking for a medium bodied red for dinner or something to have on any old evening (that won't kill you with tannin) this has to be one you grab at!
