2017 Cesar Marqués "Pico Ferreira" Bierzo

SKU #1445127

Cesar Marqués recently struck out on his own, after having an extended apprenticeship with one of Spain's modern masters, his uncle Raúl Perez. Not surprisingly, this wine -composed primarily of Valtuille de Abajo village fruit, from four different vineyards - is delicious. It's fresh, slightly spicy and plummy - plummy in a slightly savory, saline, tangy, structured way, not as in "round and plummy" and easy drinking. You can see the stylistic imprint of his uncle - a good thing to be sure - but also have a sense of what is to come with this young and talented local Leonese winemaker. This is one of his 4 single parcel offerings. It is a tiny .2 hectares. A field blend of 85% Mencia, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 5% White grapes and others all of which are over 100 year old. Hand harvested. Fermented in open top barriques with native yeast and 50% whole cluster. Maceration and fermentation last 24 days with no temp control. Very delicate handling of the ferments, either very light wetting of the cap or very delicate punch downs. After fermentation, wines are aged for one year in a 5 year old 500L barrel. No racking during this year. After one year the wine is bottled unfiltered. A miniscule 580 bottles of this were made. This is a delicious rare treat! *organic*

This is Beirzo, so it definitely has a fun side, but also is definitely Serious Wine by any indicator. Poised and elegant, with plum, licorice and jasmine all popping out on on the wonderful nose, this wine really shows itself on the palate, with all those flavors joined by a cool umami and peppercorn that gives it pleasant kick near the end. Deserves a warm day and a nice salty, meaty meal.
