2017 Millton "Te Arai" Chenin Blanc Gisbourne

SKU #1444939 97 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Gorgeously textured, swinging between unctuousness and freshness, this is asoulful wine from New Zealand’s godfather of biodynamics, James Millton. Millton’s reputation for Chenin Blanc is equally mighty, and this honeyhued beauty lives up to it in every way. Highly aromatic, like a flower garden, with heady scents of jasmine, hyacinth and lavender combining with rawhoneycomb, guava and pineapple rind. Inner quote mark (7/2020)

Outer quote mark Fresh-beeswax, chamomile and light lemon-blossom aromas with fresh melon. The palate has the same waxy, floral character. Very fresh dried peaches and mangoes flutter away on the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Inner quote mark (12/2018)

Outer quote mark Complex and fragrant, the engaging bouquet shows baked apple, mandarin and potpourri characters with subtle savoury nuances. The palate delivers excellent weight and intensity, brilliantly enhanced by succulent fruit flavours and silky texture. It is flavoursome and varietaly classic with a lingering refined finish. Style: Off-dry. At its best: now to 2022. Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark Organic/biodynamic chenin blanc that's been fermented in large barrels for extra richness and complexity. Honey, apple and toasty flavours are the dominant characters gaining support from ripe acidity. Inner quote mark (8/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark With its slightly brassy hue and hints of apricot on the nose, one wonders if a bit of botrytis found its way into the 2017 Te Arai Vineyard Chenin Blanc. There's plenty of upfront fruit in this medium-bodied offering, from those bits of stone fruit to melon and bergamot, plus hints of beeswax and wet wool, but the wine's finish falls off a bit quickly. I'd opt for drinking it over the short term. (JC) Inner quote mark (2/2019)

K&L Notes

James and Annie Millton established their winery in 1984 on the banks of the Te Arai River, near Manutuke. Located on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand in the winegrowing region of Gisborne, this was the site where early settlers first planted grapevines in 1871. Millton was the first producer in New Zealand to attain BioGro certification for organic wine production in 1989. Having practiced traditional methods of cultivation and production centered on biodynamic principles since inception, they were recognized as the first winegrower in the Southern Hemisphere to gain the biodynamic certification Demeter in 2009. *biodynamic, organic, natural*
