2017 Veronica Ortega "Quite" Bierzo

SKU #1444226 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark I also tasted the 2017 Quite, a slightly riper year, more voluptuous, with darker fruit and a touch of smoked meat that gave it a Rhône-ish twist. This is intense and powerful, with glossy tannins compared with the stony austerity of the 2016. I see this halfway between 2015 and 2016. In 2017 they suffered from frost in Valtuille and Verónica Ortega had to find grapes in other parts of Bierzo, so there are grapes from slate soils, different altitudes... Bierzo is the wine you've been telling your friends you want to drink - even if you don't know it yet. Different little parts of your favorite wines all thrown in a glass and making a killer bottle of juice that checks all sorts of boxes. Dark black fruit, smoked meat, floral and herb flavors? Got'em. Medium light body that transitions from apps to entree seamlessly? Oh yea. Crunchy, mouth watering acid that makes you want the next sip right now? Duh. This could be the it-wine of 2020, get some.

Veronica Ortega has quickly become one of my favorite wine-makers in the region because of bottles like this. Pristine fruit, savory herb, and refreshing acidity achieve sublime balance. There's dark, fleshy berries and a touch of smoked meat reminiscent of Northern Rhone reds, but with far less weight on the palate. Instead, high tone floral aromatics and the aforementioned acid provide ample lift, culminating in a lasting, satisfying mineral impression. The whole way through, black and white pepper play in the background, leaving a tingling sensation on the tongue that enhances the flavors rather than taking focus from them. Altogether, this is superbly crafted wine, and I cannot wait to share it at gatherings going forward.
