Rey Campero Tepextate + Pulquero K&L Exclusive Single Batch Lot#D5001-TP Mezcal (750ml)

SKU #1444077

This single batch of Rey Campero mezcal yeilded roughly 264 bottles, half of which remained in Mexico. The other half is exclusive to K&L. Distilled in October 2017, this batch has been resting for 30 months in glass before being bottled. This extended resting process gives this particular batch an increased sense of smoothness and elegance while carrying all of the robust flavors of Tepextate (A. Marmorata) and Pulquero (A. Atrovirens) agaves. This unique field blend of 50% Tepextate ( A. marmorata) and 50% Pulequero (A. atrovirens) was a one time production created by Romulo Sanchez almost 3 years ago. This is one of the first batches to come out of Oaxaca that Pulquero has been assigned the name Agave atrovirens. Previously, the CRM had classified the Pulquero as Salmiana. In fact, the first labels approved by the CRM and TTB for this batch had A. salmiania on them and then CRM reclassified it. The tepextate in this region take approximately 18 years to mature and the Pulquero are taking on average 15 years to mature. Like all the other Rey Campero field blends these agave are cooked together, milled together and co-fermented and then distilled in copper pot stills.

One of the things that I like about mezcals is that there is such a variety of flavors and styles. This single batch from the excellent producer Rey Campero is an excellent addition to the world of mezcals. The nose is complex with light smoke and then a layer of savory and floral aromas. In the mouth it is soft , full, round and very complex, with flavors of smoke, savory, citrus and a kiss of sweet. Please check Jackson's review below.

This needed some time in the copita but once it settled it was quite fun. Rey Campero is one of my favorite producers, in 2018 I got a chance to visit their Palenque in Yegolé and met Ramiro and Romulo along with the rest of the family (got invited to Romulo’s birthday party). The Palenque sits adjacent to the river from which they get their water and is surrounded by lush greenery and a massive tree. The land is gorgeous and the soil rich; when I was there I planted a jabali that I plan to got back to harvest and distill, but I digress. The production methods used have been passed down for generations and it shows with this offering exclusive to K&L. Initial notes on the nose were comprised of wet cement, pine forest, pineapple rind and sweet agave. As it opened up a bit more I got orange juice and a bit of cream. The palate was a nice combination of sweet and spicy, it had a creamy texture with a note of navel orange zest. The agave really came through in the finish with a nice minerality and sweet agave note that just sat on the tongue like a sumo wrestler.
