2017 Domaine Faiveley Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Chaignots"

SKU #1444055 94 points James Suckling

Concentrated and succulent, this is a really sophisticated Nuits-Saint-Georges with seductive, floral and spicy aromas and just a hint of sweet, vegetal aroma (from the stems of the 20 per cent whole bunches in the ferment). Very long, complete finish that suggests this has great aging potential. Try to wait until at least 2022. (2/2019)

Aux Chaignots is located on comparatively rich, deep clay soils, where the Faiveley holdings were planted in the early 1960s. This sees 40% new wood and has plenty of texture and aroma, with some Asian spices, nice focus and more minerality and freshness than you might expect from the terroir. Drinking Window 2023 - 2029. 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Exotic aromas of smoked duck, dark wild berries, baking chocolate and spices introduces the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots, a medium to full-bodied wine with tangy acids, satiny structuring tannins and a deep core of sapid, pungently spicy fruit. It's a definite success. This was an impressive tasting with Eve and Erwan Faiveley and able winemaker Jérôme Flous. Likening the vintage to "a broader-shouldered 2007," a judgment with which I wholeheartedly concur, Flous presented a selection of some of the 2017 portfolio's high points. Supple, expressive and nicely integrated, the reds showed very well; and the two whites were simply superb. I also revisited a selection of 2016s at my office in the United States, wines that are more classically balanced and seemingly more consistent than Faiveley's 2015s. I'll be reporting more on the winemaking and vineyard changes that have ushered in a new era at this address—as well as publishing the results of a vertical of the emblematic Clos des Corton Faiveley—in the near future. In the meantime, all these offerings come warmly recommended. (WK) (1/2019)

90-92 points Vinous

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Chaignots 1er Cru has a more cohesive, deeper bouquet than the Les Damodes, a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed stone and chalk. The elegant palate is well balanced with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and a touch of orange sorbet enlivening the finish. Excellent. (NM) (1/2019)

89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

A much spicier and more floral-suffused nose blends a touch of wood with aromas of red and dark cherry and earth. The refined, pure and energetic middle weight flavors possess good delineation on the youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This will need to develop better depth to merit the upper end of my projected range but it is already certainly very pretty. (1/2019)

K&L Notes

90-93pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Also an intense purple colour, but the fruit is a little bit darker than the racy Damodes. High class though. Rich dark fruit, a few plums, fills the mouth before a slightly sterner finish. Good length, a classical version." (01/2019)
