2016 Gulfi "NeroSanloré" Nero d'Avola Sicilia

SKU #1443883 97 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Luminous red. Precise, brooding aromas of ripe red cherry, flint, orange rind, cinnamon, lavender and violet, complicated by iodine and earth. Silky and sappy with refined but very concentrated extract, this smothers the taste buds but stays vibrant and not at all heavy, offering lovely definition and lift to the red cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral flavors. Finishes extremely deep and long, with ultra-suave tannins, mesmerizing inner-mouth perfume and extreme refinement; very Barolo-like. A lovely multilayered wine showcasing the elegant side of Nero d’Avola that very few producers ever manage to showcase. (ID) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Powerful and sublime wine, this is such an exciting and nearly perfect example of Nero d'Avola. When I tasted this wine it did remind me immediately of my mom's homemade raspberry preserve: dark and rich in berry flavor but succulent and slightly spicy; perfectly balanced with fresh acidity that lifts up all flavors and makes a juicy and long finish. Delicious and easy to enjoy just on its own.

The nose here is incredibly spicy, with a note that’s almost cracked pepper, above darker, deeper fruit notes. There’s a little savory element to it as well. The complexity of the nose just keeps drawing you in, bringing you back to the well again and again. On the nose, it has juicy elements of raspberry along with blue fruits. This is exotic. I am so into this. It’s elegant, well-structure, with vertical tannins and generous fruit. There’s a rawness to the strawberry and cherry tones. At the finish, this strikes me as a wine that is open, exposed, a clear exposition of what it is and where it is from. Stunning wine.

Very intense aromatics of dark cherries, strawberry compote and cranberries, with some toast and leather. Incredible nose! The fruit is supple and full on the palate, with nuanced notes of licorice and mint, balanced by excellent acidity. This is Nero like I’ve never had before!

Gulfi has captured Nero D'Avola at its best with their "NeroSanlore". This would be a great place to start for someone seeking out a new variety to try on their wine adventures. Juicy red fruits dance in the glass, followed by dried flowers, fresh leather, warm baking spices, rounded out with its plush texture that still carries refined structure. A great wine to bring over for dinner and share with friends.

Gulfi is one of the most accomplished wineries at what they do... bringing Nero d'Avola into the mainstream. I have tasted many of these over the years and this is the single greatest standout. The "NeroSanlore" evokes an almost Chateauneuf quality with its gorgeous strawberry and cherry fruit, dried herbal tones and potpourri of floral notes. It is seamless on the palate and has a wave of richness on the finish. The finest example of Nero d'Avola I have tasted to date and one of the best wines I have had from Sicily in some time. You would be remiss to overlook this emerging grape from one of its best producers.

This is “grand cru” quality from our friends at Gulfi; one of Sicily’s most exciting and special wineries. The NeroSanlore hails from the Vigna San Lorenzo vineyard located in eye sight of the Mediterranean. Here the non-irrigated vines are over 40 years old. There’s an intensity on the nose that carries through on the palate. This is arguably the most serious Nero d’Avolo I’ve ever tried. Based on the wines structure I’d consider laying it away for a few years. The depth of character and the concentration are quite profound. Bravo!

The nose of this wine is powerful, full of super ripe fruit at a quasi-chocolate level fruit, yet while this may seem to be a descriptor for a late harvest zinfandel this wine is anything but. On the palate that ripe chocolate is spiced with cinnamon, star anise and wild cherry all couched in a buoyant, lively richness. The wine shows a supple, highly refined texture that just flows across your tongue and at the same time it shows that it has structure and depth. The flavor spectrum explodes on your palate and seems to expose a never-ending array of flavors. The finish shows a dynamic center that holds the richness in tight and gives it great length. This is a BBQ wine or just sitting around drinking, rich powerful maybe more Californian in style but this is a really delicious wine.
