2017 Domaine Courbis "Champelrose" Cornas

SKU #1442745 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2017 Cornas Champelrose comes from granite soils and was brought up in 25% new French oak. Its deep purple color is followed by plenty of classic granite character in its damp earth, crushed rock, gravelly minerality, liquid violet, and ripe blue fruits. Medium to full-bodied, with beautiful purity, no hard edges, and a great, great finish, this is a Cornas readers should snatch up. Inner quote mark (12/2019)

Outer quote mark Hand-harvested Syrah grapes grown on granitic slopes provide the fruit for this wine. It's all destemmed, and 50% is aged in new oak barriques, 25% in one-year-old barriques, and 25% in two-year-old barriques. Aromatically it's well balanced between dried herbs, fruit and oak notes, with a thyme scent the most prominent. Medium- to full-bodied, this has real fruit intensity and freshness. It feels authentic and unforced, making for a balanced, drinkable wine. (MW) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

93-94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Inky ruby color. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe blueberry, cherry liqueur and licorice. A smoky, mineral accent builds in the glass. Appealingly sweet and seamless on the palate, offering lively dark fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors that are brightened by juicy acidity and a spicy flourish. Clings with strong tenacity on the subtly tannic finish, leaving behind smoke-tinged black/blue fruit notes. (JR) Inner quote mark (7/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Cornas Champelrose isn't quite as effusive as it was last year, but it's still a terrific example of Cornas, at what should be a fairly reasonable price. Hints of crushed stone and peppery spice accent bright red currants and cherries on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture and a long, crisp finish. It should drink well for a decade. (JC) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Reduction gives a rubbery overlay to the nose, but the palate recovers with ripe redcurrant and cherry fruit and a good peppery seasoning. Dry tannic feel offset by refreshing acidic balance, and there's good persistence on the finish. Once the nose settles, this has a lot going for it – concentrated, youthful primary fruit with classic spicy notes. (RH) 17/20 points Inner quote mark (11/2018)
