America's most exciting disillery has just sent us our first two K&L selected single barrels and they're a doozy duo. Like everything New Riff releases, these whiskies meet the requirements for Bottled-In-Bond - the only difference with the single barrels is they're bottled at cask strength, not 100 proof. Both this barrel and barrel 15-4911 were distilled on 9/8/15 and bottled on 10/10/19, but they're remarkably different. This is in part due to New Riff's unique practice of keeping all of their fermenters seperate before distillation. While most distilleries empty their fermenters into a big beer well, blending them all togehter, New Riff is designed to take advantage of the individual flavors each fermenter can contribute. This is another key design feature from Larry Ebersold - The Mastermind and Master Distiller behind New Riff's layout. Barrel 4917 has a bit of an herbal qualit to it. The palate is buttery and toasty with lots of sweetness, but there is a lively eucalyptus note that plays really well with the clove and nutmeg on the finish. It's sweet and savory at the same time, making for a perfect neat drink after dinner for those who shy away from dessert.
