We don’t seem to find much Mexicano (A. Rhodacantha) on the market, even though it has been cultivated, it is still a relatively rare agave, as it is one of my favorite sub species of agave. Mexicano or Dobadaan in some areas tends to walk a line between sweet and savory; often it is the sub species I tend to recommend to whiskey drinkers who are trying out mezcal for the first time. This bottling was an excellent example of what to expect from this plant. On the nose I immediately got lemon bars, granite rock, black/blueberry compote, underripe kiwi, smoke Havarti cheese with a light brineyness. The palate didn’t show as much smoke until you got to the finish but did keep that nice, sweet tone that held hands nicely with granite dust and sweet, fresh cut grass. The combination of sweet and earthy works wonders for this rare bottling and that theme carries well into the long finish.
