The 2016 Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb and quite classically-styled wine, coming in at fourteen percent octane. This hails from vines planted on the ridge next door to Mount Eden Vineyards, which were originally planted in 1983 (from cuttings taken from Mount Eden) and purchased by Ellie and Jeffrey Patterson in 2007. The cépages for the 2016 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% of Malbec. The wine is aged in a fifty-fifty split of American and French oak casks, with 10% of each oak renewed each vintage. The wine offers up a superb bouquet of cassis, black cherries, cigar ash, incipient notes of chipotle pepper, dark soil tones, a touch of dried eucalyptus and a refined framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a superb core of fruit, lovely soil signature, ripe, seamless tannins and a long, beautifully balanced young finish. This wine is already starting to show the first touch of velvetiness on the palate, but is still a young wine and deserves further bottle age before starting to drink it in earnest. 92+

This vintage, the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petite Verdot and 1% Malbec. Medium to deep ruby, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has a very minerally nose of crushed stone, dusty earth, warm red cherries, woodsmoke and savory/herbal hints with notions of charcuterie, warm blackberries, cherries and bitter chocolate. Medium-bodied, it offers great intensity in the mouth with finely grained, ripe tannins and great freshness, finishing long and layered. (EB)

Wine Enthusiast
The more affordable little sister of Mount Eden, this wine, which is bolstered by 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, offers black plum, wet river stones, dusty herbs and wood spice on the nose. The palate focuses on minerality, structure and savory flavors, including subtle lavender and black plum. The structure will last for ages. *Cellar Selection* (MK)

Vinous
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is soft, pliant and fruity, with lovely aromatic nuances that add an attractive upper register to the red cherry and plum fruit. Sweet floral overtones develop with a bit of time in the glass. The 2016 offers tons of fleshiness in the understated, gracious style of the year here. Domaine Eden is a terrific source for highly nuanced wines that convey plenty of Santa Cruz Mountains character at mid-tier prices, all in the same super-classic style found at sister property Mount Eden. Proper wine! Really nice, ripe but not sweet and simple Cabernet fruit. Lots of layers and integrity. This clearly has a great future and is clearly a Cab with a sense of (California) place. Well-polished tannins. (JG) 17/20 points
