2017 Fossil Point Edna Valley Pinot Noir

SKU #1440778 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Aromas of boysenberry, dried mint and lavender show on the nose of this bottling, which is crafted by the Center of Effort team. The palate is fresh in floral and dark fruit flavors that ride the steadily rising acidity into the finish. (MK) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

Outer quote mark The value-priced 2017 Pinot Noir Fossil Point comes from the Edna Valley and spent 10 months mostly in neutral French oak. It offers a pretty bouquet of bright cherries, strawberries, and sappy flowers as well as a medium-bodied, fresh, lively style on the palate. It's rock-solid, especially at the price. K&L Notes

From the producer: "In the Edna Valley, on California’s Central Coast, our vines are never far from the influence of the sea. Sunny afternoons yield daily to brisk marine breezes, and the growing season is directly shaped by the seasonal flow of the currents and surface temperature of the nearby Pacific Ocean. Even our soils of calcareous shale and coarse sand were uplifted from the ancient ocean floor and weathered into place over the millennia. Fossil Point pays tribute to this bond between sea and vine. Located less than five miles due west of our winery, Fossil Point is a rugged headland with sweeping views of the coastline from Port San Luis to the Guadalupe Dunes. Standing on Fossil Point, you can enjoy the same ocean breezes that are on their way to our vineyards, where they will guide our vines to perfect ripeness."

One of our best sub-twenty dollar California Pinots in the store, this sophisticated crowd-pleaser is back with an excellent new release. There is freshness and dark berry fruit - a bit deeper and more plush this vintage - balanced by great acid and an earthy finish. Fossil Point will make California fans happy while still feeling reminiscent of Burgundy. Delicious, balanced, and an incredible value, the 2017 is a go-to for picnics and parties; an easygoing red that will impress everyone at the table.

I've always had quite an affinity for the Fossil Point since my early days as a green horned employee at K&L as I always thought it was a fantastic Pinot for under 20 bucks. I wasn't really familiar with the Edna Valley until I had Fossil Point, but since then I've explored more wines from that area, and consistently, Fossil Point hits it where it needs to be. It's a fantastic crowd-pleasing Pinot Noir, seriously for any occasion. Bright cherry notes, almost medium bodied, and well balanced acidity, the Pinot under $20 continues to please time and time again.

Our best under $20 domestic Pinot Noir has returned with a new vintage and it's better than ever. The palate has a hint of earth and is a nice concentration of red cherries and raspberries without being heavy. The bright balancing acidity lifts everything up and assists with a deliciously persistent finish. Our best- selling and most consistent value in the store. Fossil Point FTW!
