2016 Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

SKU #1440602 95 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This silky red gives an initial impression of purity, with a core of cherry and strawberry fruit, accented by sandalwood, vanilla, stone and white pepper notes. Intense and fluid at once, showing fine harmony and excellent length. Smoke and mineral details grace the aftertaste. Inner quote mark (9/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a touch of reduction on the nose, so I had to leave the aromatics to one side. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm grip on the entry. This is a stricter, less opulent, more masculine Clos de la Roche with a saline note that became more prominent toward the finish. This will deserve at least five years in bottle: broody, a little saturnine at the moment but one surely destined to repay cellaring. Keep your eye out for this one. (NM) Inner quote mark (12/2017)

92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark Reduction dominates the nose but I doubt that it will last as nuances of fruit are 'visible'. The broad-shouldered flavors possess even better size, weight and mid-palate concentration while offering fine power and drive on the sappy, complex and balanced finale. I very much like the overall sense of harmony though again, at least moderate patience is strongly advised. Inner quote mark (1/2018)

Outer quote mark (25% new oak): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, musky nose combines purple fruits, mocha, brown spices and game, along with some subtle earth notes. The sweetest of these 2016s to this point but also fine-grained and elegant, with its intense fruit and soil flavors nicely framed by lively acidity. Very rich, dense and alive. Offers a classic Clos de la Roche combination of fruits, spices and soil character. (ST) Inner quote mark (1/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Clos de la Roche from Domaine Rousseau is again a very red fruity interpretation of this lovely vineyard this year. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a complex and perfumed blend of red plums, cherries, raw cocoa, pigeon, complex soil tones and just a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a sappy core, lovely transparency, fine-grained tannins and impressive grip and bounce on the long and classy finish. Again, if this adds a bit more structural assertiveness, my score will seem quite conservative. The wine was raised in twenty-five percent new oak in this vintage. Inner quote mark (11/2017)

90 points Decanter

Outer quote mark It’s always perplexing why Rousseau’s Clos de la Roche isn’t better, as the domaine acquired their parcel here back in 1933. The wine reveals aromas of beetroot, bloody game, red fruit and rich soil, followed by a medium-bodied palate with a sweet core of fruit and a chewy chassis of light tannins. This would rank as an excellent village wine, but without seeing the label it would be difficult to identify this as a grand cru. (WK) Inner quote mark (10/2017)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Rich and denser than most Rousseau wines. Morey drive. Edge of tannin and acidity. Really quite marked (even though we are not tasting from a new cask). Firm. Definitely to be aged. Lots to chew on with the haunting bouquet emerging only at the very end at the moment. (JR) 18/20 Inner quote mark (11/2017)

K&L Notes

93-96pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Richer deeper bright colour, with a firmer more backward nose (compared to the Mazy-Chambertin). It has the same dark red cherry fruit profile but with a little extra intensity, certainly a memorable finish, tasted from one year old barrel."
