One of the best operating cooperatives in the whole south of France, this humble little facility was a merger between the Tautavel and Vingrau co-ops. They make some of the most representative and spectacular values anywhere. The Silex is all fruit from the surrounding villages of Tautavel from vines with an average age of 50 years. This blend is 60% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah, 10% Carignan all fermented and aged in stainless tank.

Roussillon has become one of my favorite regions in France for Grenache blends. You can go to the more famous regions but the wines are always more expensive or under deliver. I think it is the unique geology and strive to be recognized, by mostly younger winemakers, that sets this region apart. This wine is charming. WIth lifted ripe clean fruit, easy tannins with just enough grip and a fun underlying minerality. There is good extraction and the Grenache fruit really plays out on the finish.

This delicious Grenache-dominant blend is fermented and aged in stainless tank yet still possesses some of that intensity and complexity that oak can lend. There are plenty of ripe raspberry, cherry, roasted plums, and spicy black pepper here, with a mineral presence and brilliant acidity. A lustrous red with power and personality that I suggest opening up about an hour in advance — the air awakens the fruit flavors and aromas.

One of the more interesting Roussillons I've come across recently. Lively, spicy and exciting. The higher levels of Syrah really come through in final blend. There's plenty of tannin grip to this, but not over the top. The palate is full of bright, crisp red fruit--I have to borrow a term from Pinot Noir--but this wine is crunchy. I would drink this in a second over any of the ocean of non-descript California red blends out there. It's doing much of the same thing, but is so much more interesting, delicious and fun to drink. Dang, that's a great little wine.

This one leans a bit into the modern vernacular; which I think will increase its popularity; but that pure clean fruit is cut by wild notes of Asian spice and wet stone. Initially I thought the wine was a bit one-dimensional, but with sufficient air, the underlying complexity became more and more apparent. I tasted this wine over two days and found it to be extremely enjoyable both nights. A suitable match up for winter stews and roasts.

I was introduced to the wines of les Vignerons de Tautavel Vingrau (VTV) on my first buying trip to the Roussillon. It was a snowy day, which is a rather rare occurrence in the region (making it even more memorable) and I dropped into the tasting room and met the whole crew behind the wines of VTV, Cabirau and special guest/vigneron Jeff Carrel. I tasted through 20 or so wines across the entire range and all were impressive. That day cemented in my mind the quality and range of wines coming from the Roussillon and what great partnerships we could establish going forward. Now, several years later, I am that much happier to taste some of the new releases of VTV. This year, one of the great standouts is the "Silex." A grenache inspired red that delivers incredible intensity of fruit but significant balance as well. Deep blue fruit tones with loads of black plum, this has notes of earth, chalk and savory herbs that bring a lot of complexity to the table. This is a deeply satisfying red to kick the changing season off with and should aptly pair with loads of braised dishes from pork shoulder to brisket. Pure deliciousness.

Lots of dark fruit in the nose, yet elegantly restrained not the flamboyant sweetish type one sees all to often. On the palate the wine shows a depth of flavor and a supple, polished texture that is supported by a tannic framework, that is there but just holds the wine together and isn't in the way. This is a wine with lots of depth, flavor and intrigue, very, very solid in this price range.
