2018 Domaine de Millet Colombard-Ugni Blanc Côtes de Gascogne Blanc

SKU #1440229

Côtes de Gascogne is primarily known for the production of Armagnac; it wasn’t until the last 20 years or so that producers began to take table wine production seriously. Traditionally, these wines would have been distilled into Armagnac. Producers found that by fermenting at lower temperatures in stainless steel, they could develop and preserve more powerful aromatics. Though yields are high, costs have stayed low and the wines are consequently some of the best bargain whites in France. Domaine de Millet is first and foremost an Armagnac producer. They are fifth-generation producers with the reins now in the hands of daughter Laurence. The Côtes de Gascogne Blanc is an expressive blend of 50% Colombard and 50% Ugni Blanc. This wine is a great alternative white for you Sauvignon Blanc drinkers out there. It is loaded with peach and citrus aromatics and has vibrant acidity and clarity.

It amazes me that we are now drinking wines from Gasgogne, and beautiful wines at that! This Colombard/Ugni Blanc offers a lot of tropical fruit along a juicy acidity that not only frames the wine nicely but also entices the appetite for another sip. Try that with light appetizers, salads, light seafood, and I could go on...

This crisp white is a perennial staff favorite that still flies a bit under the radar for most customers. If you haven’t tried them, Côtes de Gascogne whites should definitely be on your list, especially at this price. Extremely quaffable (a word I hate using but it works so well here), Domaine de Millet is a blend of Colombard and Ugni Blanc, and has a juicy yet bright feel similar to Sauvignon Blanc. Easygoing but with more acid than expected, the 2018 release is lively and delicious, and a perfect cheap and cheerful, food-friendly pickup.

It's Millet Time! A crazy value for what has been a top party pick for customers year after year. A 50/50 blend of Colombard and Ugni Blanc fermented in stainless steel,it's got zippy acidity and clean, fresh citrus notes of grapefruit, tangerine and lemon. This is the ultimate no-fuss thirst quencher that is an ideal wine for Sauvignon Blanc fans looking for something different.

This has been the best deal around in table whites for years now. It is very floral and mineral on the nose, with an open knit texture that is so easy to drink for such a light-bodied, crisp and dry wine. Having mussels? Drink this.

There are wines that make you 'think' and wines that you 'drink', the former contemplative wines consisting of great subtlety and finesse, demanding a measure of quiet reverence as you approach them, genuflecting each step of the way. Great, wonderful, but no, at an outdoor picnic or loud party such wines are out of place. So reach for a case of this super-drinkable, crisp and welcoming white, made from Colombard and Ugni Blanc, some of the same fruit-luscious grapes that make Armagnac and brandies. Aromas and flavors of white peaches, acacia blossoms, fresh-sliced green apples and citrus fruits all play a part in this expressive, invigorating and thirst-quenching wine. Seriously good, and priced to sell!
