2017 Guy Farge "Harmonie" Cornas

SKU #1440226 92-94 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Also not destemmed, the 2017 Cornas Harmonie was brought up in used barrels and is the classic Cornas cuvée of the estate. Its saturated purple color is followed by textbook notes of blackberries, plums, green olives, violets, and chocolate. It's a fleshy, full-bodied, textured barrel sample that has loads to love. Inner quote mark (12/2018)

93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark From 30-year-old vines planted on granite, with a hand-picked yield of just 22hl/ha. It's 100% whole-bunch fermented, and matured in 5-year-old 400l oak barrels for 12 months. Detailed and open, it has a herbal register with a touch of menthol freshness. It's only medium-bodied, not overly concentrated or over-ambitious. Extraction and oak are sensitively handled to deliver a delicious, precise Cornas that's ready to drink immediately. (MW) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Like Farge's other top reds, the 2017 Cornas Harmonie was left entirely undestemmed. Notes of crushed stone accent red currants on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky and crisp, restrained yet fruity, supple and long on the finish. (JC) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Deep, brilliant violet. A heady bouquet evokes spice-tinged dark berries and pungent flowers, along with hints of incense and licorice. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering bitter cherry, cassis, candied violet and spicecake flavors and a touch of palate-numbing cracked pepper. Puts on weight with air and finishes very long and spicy, with resonating dark berry character and steadily building tannins. (JR) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark 100% whole-bunch fermented. Aged for 12 months in oak (75% new). Lovely herbal overlay on top of pristine cherry and blackberry. Long, profound, open-knit. Understated complexity. Not too stemmy, not too oaky. Very supple structure. Superb winemaking. (RH) 17.5/20 points Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

Guy Farge took over the management of his family estate in 1980. Originally he sold his fruit to the Cave de Tain (where he worked) and then to Delas. In 2007, he began producing wines under his own label. Each year, the wines have grown and evolved as has Guy's winemaking prowess. Now working with his son Thomas, each bottling represents some of the best we have seen from his primarily granitic terroirs. The Cornas is a particularly special site composed primarily of the Reynard lieu-dit and a small portion of Sauman. It is aged in 400L primarily used barrels for about 12 months. The results, as with all of Guy's wines, are pure balanced expressions of this terroir.

Someone once called a Cornas wine 'a lorry driver, not a ballerina'. Well, my answer would be 'why can't a ballerina drive a lorry?' This superlative wine demonstrates the sinuous grace of a dancer with the supple ability to shift into high gear as the rich, savory fruit unveils its telltale charms in the glass. A Cornas of poise and character, showcasing the excellent marriage of fruit and oak, and the deft touch of a true winemaker who works, lives and breathes the air in the vineyards. Nothing exaggerated, just pure and refined and in a word, delicious.

Every time a new vintage of this arrives in our stores is like a second Christmas. I am admittedly a huge fan of French Syrah, but this wine will appeal to most any palate. An enchanting nose of jasmine, lilac and freshly tilled earth leads to an equally pretty palate boasting ripe boysenberry, stewed meat, dried herbs and pristine acid. It's such a joy to taste that I could not resist the impulse to revisit this bottle several times over the course of the day. I highly recommend stocking multiple bottles to avoid the disappointment of running out.

This is now the third vintage of this wine we have imported and each subsequent vintage has in some way topped the previous. The 2015 was a powerhouse. Structured and powerful, it will benefit with years in the cellar to show it best self. The 2016 was perfumed and open. One of the best drinking Cornas' we had from that vintage and will continue to delight for years to come. The 2017 is the "most" Cornas though. This just feels so much like the region, the smell of the fruit, the smoky bacon, the crushed herbs. In your glass it transports. That is my favorite expression in any wine. I've been fortunate enough to visit Guy Farge and this region and every swirl, sniff and sip brings me back to Cornas. For a relatively humble price at this quality level, you don't need to get on a plane to be transported. Just open a bottle of this amazing wine.
