2017 Mas de Sainte Croix "Passion d'Une Terre" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Valreas

SKU #1440212 91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Ripe and warm in feel, featuring blackberry and boysenberry puree flavors, supported by a graphite spine and carrying through an anise- and lavender-infused finish, all while the fruit easily keeps pace. Solid. (JM) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

90 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Grenache provides the juicy red fruit of this wine while mourvèdre fills it out with bass tones of chocolate, olives and roasted nuts. It’s dense and dark, a red you can almost chew on. Inner quote mark (10/2019)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Despite its massive body and alcohol, this luscious blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvèdre maintains delightfully crisp blackberry flavors accented by hints of rose, violet and anise. It’s a rich, penetrating wine with silky, integrated tannins cushioning the finish. Drink now-2024. (AI) Inner quote mark (5/2020)

K&L Notes

Jacques Coipel worked in the petrol industry until 2002 when he decided to change career paths and enter the wine business. He purchased an exceptional site in the Cotes du Rhone Village Cru of Valreas. His vineyards sit at around 1,200 feet with a mix of clay, limestone and gravel making up the soils. With cooling winds from the north and at this higher altitude, there is a crispness to the wines showing more red fruit qualities in the reds and more vibrant apple tones in the whites. Around the same time Jacques's son, Julien, began studying winemaking working in Switzerland and New Zealand (with Te Mata, one of our favorites). Julien returned to Ste. Croix in 2010 and began working on the wine with his father. Julien's lighter but technical touch makes for wines that are great expressions of the Valreas terroir. The "Passion d'Une Terre" is primarily Grenache with a heavy dose of Mourvedre. It is a full-bodied wine with ripe berry notes, a succulent palate and long lengthy finish. This is one of my favorite southern Rhone values of late as the quality and depth far exceed the price. Rich Grenache fruit is blended with a substantial amount of Mourvedre that adds delicious black fruit flavors along with substantial weight texture. This is the ideal wine with lamb, meat casseroles and hearty stews.

The Steal of the century is back! This is our third vintage of Mas De Saint Croix Passion D' Une Terre, and it never ceases to amaze me, especially when you consider the price. Grenache dominates about 75% of this blend, with a good 25% of Mouvedre that makes up the rest, which helps give the wine that perfect balance of medium body we all know and love. With notes of jam, spice and silky tannins, this wine is everything nice, and definitely worth having a case or two on hand for every day drinking.

The "Passion" is yet another charming release from one of my favorite producers in the southern Rhone, Mas de Sainte Croix. The village of Valreas is one of the furthest north in the southern Rhone and sits at higher altitudes, yielding fresher and brighter styles that are a great contrast to some of the heavier styles of Rasteau and Plan de Dieu further south. Father and son team, Jacques and Julien Coipel, are by no means afraid of fruit expression though. This has plenty of it but that underlying elegance and spice from the grenache, plus a hefty dose of Mourvedre goes a long way to keep this beautifully balanced. There is no shortage of great values in the Rhone but count this as one of my favorites for sure.

Delicious every day red. It opens with sun-warmed dark fruits with savory spicy nuances. Then the palate explodes, the fruit pops with a mix of dark and red fruits and spice. Lots of spice! This is rich, easy delicious. I finishes with soft tannins and a touch of earth and spice.

It’s easy to get lost in the wines of the Southern Rhone. They’re all some mix of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah, there is an ocean of different villages, each with different names and slight peculiarities. Yet within this vast wine region, Valreas has always stood out to me like a shiny, little gem. You don’t see it very often, but wines like Mas Sainte Croix are dramatically different from other villages in the Southern Rhone. Most of this is due to sheer altitude, as it is one of the most northern villages in the Cotes-du-Rhone appellation, backed way up into the mountains. The altitude creates a cooler climate, which gives these wines a more concentrated, black-fruited expression along with a brilliant aromatic profile. The Passion is a great example. Pretty and floral, you’ll find touches of violet, and dried thyme above a palate that is dense, full, and brimming with concentration. There is so much weight and richness here. This is a bright, beautiful wine that’s seductively fragrant, and yet built like a mack truck. For anyone who has any interest in wines from this part of the world, definitely check out the distinctive, and delicious wines of Valreas.
