2016 Domaine Drouhin "Laurène" Dundee Hills Pinot Noir

SKU #1439966 97 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark There’s a savory stance here that sets it apart from the regular Dundee Hills bottling. Earthy and spicy forest-wood aromas sit across ripe red cherries and fresh red flowers. The palate has a long, smooth and elegant core of red cherries. Very svelte and composed. This is beautifully regal pinot. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (7/2019)

94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Deep, glistening red. Vibrant black raspberry, cherry liqueur and rose oil scents, along with hints of dusty minerals, mocha and baking spices. Juicy, seamless and energetic on the palate, offering appealingly sweet dark berry and floral pastille flavors that fan out steadily and turn spicier with air. Smooth, even tannins lend shape to the impressively persistent finish, which shows strong, floral- and spice-driven tenacity. (JR) Inner quote mark (6/2019)

94 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Laurène, named for Veronique Drouhin’s daughter, leads with notes of sassafras and smoke before revealing a plummy core of cherry flavor. It’s lifted, the fruit guided on burnished tannins, the finish elegant and a bit backward, the wine needing years for peak expression. Inner quote mark (4/2020)

93 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This is a smoky, silky wine loaded with ripe and juicy blackberry fruit. The percentage of new oak is not disclosed, but there's just the right amount of barrel toast evident in the nose and the flavor. Lovely already, this should age nicely over the next decade. (PG) Inner quote mark (7/2019)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2016 Pinot Noir Laurene is pale to medium ruby-purple with aromas of Earl Grey tea leaves and orange peel over a core of black cherries, black licorice and potpourri. Light to medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with fresh black fruits and spicy suggestions, framed by very fine, grainy tannins and packed with juicy acidity, finishing long with warm black fruit. (EB) 92+ Inner quote mark (9/2018)

92 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Vibrant and sleekly complex, with layered raspberry and cherry flavors, accented by orange-tinged tea, bay leaf and spice notes that build tension toward polished tannins. (TF) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

K&L Notes

Winery Notes: "Named after Véronique Drouhin's elder daughter, Laurène is our flagship wine, and is produced entirely from Pinot Noir grown on the family's estate in the Dundee Hills. All of the fruit is handpicked into small totes, destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and then placed into barrels (French oak, never more than 20% new). Once the vintage is safely in the cellar, Véronique begins the process of selecting barrels which have an extra complexity, length and depth - barrels which will work together as Laurène."

The Flagship bottling from Domaine Drouhin's incredible property in Dundee Hills never disappoints and this wine is absolutely singing upon release. It has all of the exotic aromas, flavors and silky textures the Dundee Hills are known for, and yet for all of its elevated, polished, luxurious qualities it's a wine that also stays true to its Burgundian heritage with immaculate poise, elegance and length. Generously fruited and lush on the palate, the wine is approachable in its youth and yet the savory underpinnings, fine grained tannin and precise acidity assure a long life ahead. Everything is perfectly proportioned and beautifully crafted without feeling homogenized. The vineyards here are some for the most impressive in the state and Véronique's pedigree in the cellar is clearly evident. Given all this, I consider the wine an exceptional value especially compared to high-end Burgundy. No expense or attention to detail is spared in the making of this wine and it shows through and through.
