Verdicchio is the top wine from this Adriatic region, and the best known in the U.S. The area’s red wines are not names that roll off our customers’ tongues very often: Rosso Conero, Lacrima di Moro d’Alba, Rosso Piceno. The Il Pollenza estate, where this wine was made, lies about an hour’s drive south of Ancona and is about 35km inland from the Adriatic Sea, in the province of Macerata. It is an incredibly beautiful estate that belongs to an ancient and famous Marche family with history going back to 1200. The winemakers at this estate are royalty in their field. From 1999 to 2006, Dr. Giacomo Tachis, perhaps Italy’s best known winemaker (Sassicaia etc.), was in charge. Upon his retirement, Dr. Carlo Ferrini took over. He’s the author of the “Chianti 2000” program, instituted while he was head winemaker for the Chianti Classico Consortium. So: two of the biggest names in Italian winemaking. The 2015 Il Pollenza Marche Porpora is 50% Merlot and 50% Montepulciano and spent 12 months in a mix of French barriques and tonneaux. It’s a full-bodied wine that will be best suited for grilled meat or hearty casseroles. Decant this wine an hour ahead.

Most of the Marche wines we offer are white as Verdicchio thrives in the subzones of Castelli di Jesi and Matelica. Lesser known are the reds from this sparcely populated region so we are always excited about excellent offerings when we come across them. "Il Pollenza" is a medium-to-full-bodied blend of Merlot and Montepulciano with plenty of black and blue fruit flavors with hints of licorice and dried tobacco. Fine tannins and soft acidity make this perfect to open today with meats, cheeses and hearty dishes.
