2014 Trinity Hill "The Gimblett" Bordeaux Blend Hawke's Bay (Black Label) (Elsewhere $30)

SKU #1436700 95 points Bob Campbell

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot and Malbec. Dense, silken-textured wine with dark berry, cedar, liquorice, subtle floral and spicy oak flavours. A firmly-structured wine with obvious cellaring potential. (5/2019)

95 points Sam Kim

Following the magnificent 2013 rendition, this is another brilliant offering under this label. Youthful yet completely harmonious and delectable. Aromas of cassis, dark plum, blueberry and game with nuances of bay leaf, cedar and floral on the nose. The palate is concentrated and intense, but not heavy, and delivers fine texture and awesome fruit purity, beautifully framed by chalky tannins. (1/2016)

I continue to shout our the unbelievable quality of Gimblett Gravels Bordeaux blends from the hilltops. I have to. These wines show incredible quality for the price, and a distinctiveness, and refinement, that is unheard of at these price points. I could tell from the first sip that the 2014 Trinity Hills was going to be incredible. It shows all of that characteristic density that is so clearly related to Gimblett. The nose shows blackberry, chocolate, clove, and baking spices. The palate is rich and decadent, with black, black fruits, and piercing acidity that gives the wine balance and fineness. Plenty of tannin gives the wine structure, but it's remarkably accessible. Let’s be honest, at $25 this is an absolutely ridiculous wine. For anyone who is drinking modern-style Bordeaux or Napa Cabernet, you need to check out what’s happening in Hawke’s Bay.

The wines of Gimblett gravels are some of the best deals in luxury Bordeaux blends in the world, and this is a prime example. It has a beautiful supple texture from ripe, silky tannins, rich flavors of red currants, cherry, graphite and smoke and perfect balance between ripe fruit, earthy undertones and balancing acidity. Try this with your next filet mignon.

Hawkes Bay is just one of the best places in the world for Cabernet blends. This is the perfect showcase for what those grapes can do in the Gimblett gravels of this special place. The wine has new world levels of fruit with old-world structure and most importantly to me a unique fine earthiness that you can not find anywhere else. The wine dances on the palate with dark red fruits, mild herbs, a touch of chocolate and enough tannin to let you know that it is there and structure the wine without intruding. This is a perfect K&L wine, we sell a lot of Bordeaux and a lot of CA Cabernet this is both but in one bottle.

There is no better place to find quality Bordeaux blends in New Zealand than Gimblett Gravels. The soils set themselves up perfectly to put just enough stress on the vines to makes the fruit here punchy and incredibly flavorful. Trinity Hills has been a producer we have been working with for years now because they are truly one of the best. This wine has the perfect amount of Cab Franc for me, which gives it that savory, herbal tone, making it the ultimate compliment to steak dinners. Cab Sauv and Merlot give depth and soft fruits and the varietals as a hole manage to find perfect balance. Pick this one up for your next Friday steak and Claret night.

I have loved the wines from this part of the world for a long time, and this wine is a great example of what you can find here. There are very few places outside of the Medoc where can you find wines with such brooding, gravely intensity, and varietal expression. The 2014 Gimblett is packed with river rock tinged black and blue fruit, tobacco notes, and graphite. Medium-bodied but with formidable structure that calls for red meat, this really over-delivers for the price point when you look at it in a global context of wines of this style. Decant if drinking now...and don't forget to put some in the cellar for the next decade of enjoyment.
