2017 Nor Wester by Greystone Pinot Noir North Canterbury

SKU #1436046 93 points Bob Campbell

Gently aromatic wine with bright cherry, crushed herb, anise, spice and nutty oak flavours. A supple, accessible, medium-bodied Pinot Noir with character and sophistication. It offers good value at this price. (5/2019)

93 points Sam Kim

Wonderfully fruited and immediately appealing, the bouquet shows dark cherry, plum, warm spice and cedar characters, leading to a succulent palate that is supple and beautifully rounded. The wine offers terrific fruit intensity and silky texture, finishing long and delicious. (7/2019)

91 points James Suckling

This is a dark-fruited, rich and succulent, cherry-flavored Pinot that has immediate appeal and delivers so much rich, fresh cherry flavor in a simple, drinkable guise. (8/2019)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Nor'wester Pinot Noir (a reference to the prevailing winds) offers up a pleasing combination of mossy oak, savory, meaty notes and ripe cherries. It's medium-bodied, with a soft, dusty tannin structure and mouthfeel, and a lingering, silky finish. Nicely done. (JC) (7/2019)

The Nor Wester is back with a bang. Despite the 2016 being one of our best-selling New Zealand Pinot Noirs of 2019, the 2017 is even better. I’ve spilt a lot of ink shouting the praises of New Zealand 2017 Pinot, and the 2017 Nor Wester is another perfect example of how against all odds, New Zealand ended up with one of its best vintages in a decade. The Nor Wester is dark and concentrated; there is a remarkable amount of depth to this Pinot Noir. The touchstone here is without a doubt Cote de Nuits in Burgundy--but with a quality-to-price ratio that is absolutely off the charts. In fact, you just don’t see Pinot Noir this good at $20 anywhere else. Full and round on the palate, there is a ton of minerality to this wine, with brooding, earthy components. Plenty of tannin gives this wine excellent grip along with bright, focused acid. This wine is an unstoppable value, and one of my absolute top picks in the store.

Another stunning Pinot hailing from the lesser-known North Canterbury. At $20 a pop, this earthy and savory red is a real steal. The richer tones are met with bright red fruit, some spiciness, and a fresh acidity, rounding this out as a truly food-friendly wine. This would be a option to buy by the case and not worry about popping open on a Tuesday night – while still genuinely enjoying what’s in the bottle.

What a remarkable bottle of Pinot Noir for the price point. This has it all: a stunning nose of crushed flowers, woodsy spices, damp earth and fennel; juicy, forest berry fruits, anise, black cherry and subtle cracked peppercorn. Silky on the palate with bright, crunchy acidity and super fine tannins. It's very refined and layered for an inexpensive bottle...totally over delivers. Impressive stuff.

If you want to know what the nose of a great Pinot Noir should be like, pick this up. The fruit is sweet and bright, but it's tempered with a really lovely dark earthiness...It's absolutely intoxicating. On the nose alone, this wine over-delivers! On the palate, it's a simple being; fresh red fruits laced with a bit of smokiness / brambliness. As a weekday wine, this is exactly what I want; a compelling nose that I can enjoy all evening long with the simplicity that should pair perfectly with many of my simple weekday meals.

Greystone has done it again with a beautiful cool climate moderate alcohol pinot at a great price. Bright acidity and juicy fruit combine for pure pleasure drinking. Silky smooth tannins provide just enough structure without overwhelming the palate - a very Burgundian style coming out of Canterbury that deserves a place on the table.

This is serious Pinot Noir at a very fun price point. This is aromatic, structured and fresh. High toned aromatics with nice depth, with layers of spice and earth. The palate has some concentration and fresh acidity. This wine is a perfect bridge from the New World to the Old.

.The nose of this wine shows some serious quality fruit, bright while still showing depth. On the palate this wine shows weight and a bit of stemmy grip to give the wine some structure and resonance. The finish is a bit condensed but still shows lots of character for a wine of this price-point carrying through a lot of fruit and earth
