2017 Ridge Vineyards "Pagani Ranch" Sonoma Valley Zinfandel

SKU #1435381 94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Winemaker John Olney says that the long hang-time of the grapes shifts the red-fruit notes towards sweet cherries and boysenberries, without any cloying overripeness. Pagani has earthiness, too. This is Zinfandel with Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet and Mataro. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030 (JC) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Outer quote mark A blend of 84% Zinfandel with the balance Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet, and Mataró, the 2017 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch reveals a translucent ruby/purple color as well as a beautifully complex bouquet of sandalwood, spice box, new leather, charred earth, and mulled plums and blueberries. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and textured, with sweet tannins, this beautiful Zinfandel knocks it out of the park in this difficult vintage. Inner quote mark (11/2019)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The medium ruby colored 2017 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch offers lovely layers of tricolored berry preserves and stone fruit cobbler with baker's chocolate, dusty earth, garrigue, iron, fried herbs, charcuterie and an exotic spice undercurrent. Medium to full-bodied, it floods the mouth with floral-tinged fruits framed firmly with grainy tannins and lifted by juicy freshness, finishing very long and layered. (EB) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Zinfandel Pagani Ranch is fabulous. A dark, exotic beauty, the Pagani possesses off the charts flavor intensity and depth, with striking perfume, voluptuous fruit and magnificent balance. Inky red/purplish berries, lavender and spice are all amped up in this racy, extroverted Zinfandel from one of the most historic sites in Sonoma Valley. (AG) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This mid-weight blend of 84% Zinfandel, 7% Petite Sirah, 7% Alicante Bouschet and 2% Mataro has a brambly, dark-berry nose with some purple flowers in the mix. The sleek palate has such freshness and the tannins are striking for their polish and finesse. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (9/2019)

K&L Notes

Alicante Bouschet plays a role in many a Pagani Ranch Zinfandel blend, as this vineyard plays a prominent role in many a Sonoma County wine country tourist's photo: just look for the red-leafed vineyard in front of a big white barn. (Special note for fans of the wine movie, Bottle Shock: the vineyard is located directly across Calif. Highway 12 from the ruins of John Drummond's Dunfillan Winery, which served as a fictional recreation of the 1976 Paris tasting).

One of the most memorable wines I ever tasted was the 1990 Ridge Geyserville purchased and drank upon release. Growing up in NJ I was mostly exposed to inexpensive European wines which were oftentimes middling Rhones or poor excuses from Italy served at my favorite restaurants in Little Italy. But when I first put my nose in that '90 Geyserville, it nearly blew my mind. I had never encountered so much luxurious fruit. Well, this Pagani Ranch Zinfandel reminded me of that earlier wine. It's such an excruciatingly delicious wine just packed with fresh brambly berries with a mile long finish. I could smell this amazing fruit bowl bouquet all day long. Simply lovely.

This makes a striking first impression, blooming with exquisite aromatics of fresh berries, spring blossoms, potpourri and tropical flowers. I could spend all day with my nose in the glass. Despite that tough act to follow, the palate holds up, alight with raszzleberry, pomegranate, and fine-grained tannins. This could definitely use some time in the bottle - the flavors will continue to develop beautifully as it settles and matures - but it's singing already with a quick decant. If you have the patience to hold onto it for a few years, you will be handsomely rewarded. Just grab a few more bottles of it to drink while you wait.

I don't think it's possible for Ridge to make a bad wine. They're one of California's most iconic and reputable wine producers, and Pagani Ranch is a fine example of their continuous consistent craft. The first moment you stick your nose in the glass, it's already very inviting, with hints of plum, blueberry, and baking spice. Just wait till you actually taste it. This is a very well structured wine, with a nice cherry, and strawberry rhubarb flavor profile, balanced by brilliant acidity, this is a wine made for a Zin lover. I can see it holding up very nicely for the next 5-10 years.

An exceptional deal on an exceptional bottle of wine. Pagani Ranch is one of the most highly regarded vineyards in the state. Planted between 1890 and 1914 these centurion vines are something to behold. Now farmed by the 4th generation of the Pagani family, this legendary vineyard is planted to a mix of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Mataro (Mourvedre) and Alicante Bouschet. Ridge has crafted a single vineyard wine from this hallowed site every year for for the last 30 years straight. The 2017 is absolutely singing and for me the highlight of the Zinfandel based releases from Ridge in 2017. It has all the richness and lush fruit you could want from old vine Zin but also retains freshness, purity and elegance. Dark fruits mingle with perfumed Asian spice and scorched earth tones. Super fine, satin like tannin. A simply delicious bottle of wine for right now or 10 years down the road. At this special price it's a steal.

From a legendary producer and a storied, ancient-vine vineyard comes yet another Zin that flirts with perfection. An outpouring of ripe wild berries, dried red cherry, plum galette, and exotic spices greet the nose along with additional accents of red rose, white tea, mint, tobacco, and vanilla. There's a rich generosity on the palate tempered by the hallmark Ridge precision and pinpoint focus that is a cornerstone of their winemaking style. Zin is so tricky to get just right...capturing all that ebullient fruit and spice without sacrificing balance, complexity, and finesse...yet Ridge manages to accomplish this regularly. A special producer, a special property, and a special wine.
